I swap my tranny for a spare one I have and change the clutch cable and now I can’t engage the reverse rear.

No problem engaging the other gear, 1 to 4, but every time I try to engage the reverse gear I get that
grinding sound and vibration on the shifter stick, like the gear still turning and I can’t get in.

I try starting the car in reverse with the clutch depress and release it to confirm that the reverse gear is functional.

I have no history on this tranny, I was just hoping that it would be better
then the other one that have a small leak and was sometime hard to engage in reverse.

So, what do you thing it is?
Dead synchro?
Cable adjustment?
???

Maybe you need to (re)adjust the clutchcable? That is what it sounds to me.

Could be the worn shift lever problem (if reverse in the 4-speed shift pattern is the same as in the Audi 5-speed (to the right and back)).
A how-to fix is here - http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=18424

Since we're talking gearboxes... is there a synchro for the reverse gear? And first gear?

Why would there be a synchro? There's no previous gear to sync with...or am I posing a stupid question here?

Problem solved
A warm up tranny and a bit of adjustment did the trick.
Thanks to all.
