I picked up an 82 924, and an 80 931 recently, within a week of each other. The project list keeps growing and growing. On the 931, I was having a slightly hard time starting. I began troubleshooting starting with the fuel filter. I blew the old filter out with compressed air, and there was plenty of crud. So, new fuel filter in which helped...then I notice my clutch pedal is gradually starting to lose rebound. I found some brake fluid around the clutch master cylinder shaft that the pedal mounts to. So, this week I'll be doing:
-Timing belt and water pump replacement (931)
-Radiator flush (931)
-Clutch master cylinder replacement, slave rebuild (931)
-Air Fuel adj and tune up (924)
-Charge AC (924&931)
-Finish reinstalling trans and exhaust (951)
No more time, but it keeps me outta trouble. Feel free to post any shortcuts or "things to look out for while..." pointers. |

The timing belt install can be a bit frustrating. Before removing the old belt, set the cam and crank at TDC. Note the marks, especially that the mark for the cam is on the engine side of cam pulley. When you install the new belt, and new tensioner, rotate the crank pulley, not the cam pulley, back a degree or two. The tensioner will move the belt, which in turn, moves the crank pulley back to TDC. Triple check the marks! Might take an attempt or two to get it right.
Also check the lower charge tube bracket, first, that you have one, second that the a bolt hasn't backed out, or sheared off.
If you have crud in the fuel filter, then you probably have the same in the tank. Remove the in-tank fuel pump in the bottom of the tank and drain the old gas out. If crud comes out, from the top, remove the sensor/sender (pain in the butt to get at it), and peer into the tank to see crud! _________________ '83 944 Track car.
