hello all. i have had my stock 1987 924s for a while and am looking forward to driving it when all the white stuff melts.my question is what should i expect to get for gas millage? its stock so no chip...yet anyways.also would it make a great difference to run premium instead of regular?or should i run premium all the time?or just a preference thing.thanks for the upcoming advice.

The car requires premium gas (at least 90) so you should be running that regardless. I haven't had mine for very long and have been working on it, and it has been cold. So I got 13mpg last time I filled, which has been damn near all city driving, with heat blasting and lots of idling as I work on and test stuff.

If you are getting 13 mpg something is not right. These cars should get between 22 to 26 mpg.

1987 924s cars can run on 87 just fine. The 1988 cars take 91 because they have different pistons, but owning a 1988 924se I can tell you that you can get away with running 87 just fine. I honestly have not noticed any difference in fuel economy or power between 87 and 91 octane in the 924s, however in turbocharged cars like the 951 I always run the highest octane I can buy for the detonation resistance.

New filters
Just put on a new fuel pressure damper--today.
Cam belts changed every 2 or 3 years.
Injectors cleaned and I put a can of Chevron injector cleaner in occasionally.
Tires at 29psi front --36psi rear
No vacuum leaks.

Here is another list:

Answer to your question---Premium gas is a waste of money in the '87

If you get the FR Wilk chip and run it in "FR Wilk Mode" it will advance the timing a bit. If you do not run higher octane gas, you will get some pinging upon heavy acceleration. If you run it in stock mode, I suspect the lower octane gas would be fine.

I always run 92 octane or higher, but I don't drive it on the street much, and always run it with the chip turned on.

Yeah, I haven't done a compression test yet, or much advanced diagnostics. I have been focusing on getting it inspected (and passing). Once the weather warms up I am going to delve into things deeper and see if I can figure out the issue.

As dumb as this sounds, check to make sure your odometer is rolling correctly. If your internal gears are becoming stripped they can be slipping and giving you false mileage.

Actually, considering the age of the car that is a very valid point. I will do a run down a set distance and figure that out when I get the chance. Thanks for the tip!

I just took a trip down to the Phoenix area Sunday to watch the Super Bowl at my brother's place (YEA PACKERS!!!) and fueled up in Wittman on my way home. 173.6 miles on the odo and it took 5.68 gallons...30.5 MPG! Average speed was around 70 MPH on this trip, with some "spurts" to stretch Blaze's legs a bit .

However the car is quite a bit lower than stock, therefore less air going under the car, which helps a bit.

In "mixed" driving I get about 19 MPG, but must admit I drive somewhat "spiritedly" .

I get terrible gas mileage.. I think it's mostly due to having an automatic though. When I drove all highway to lake havasu, az, I got about 20-24MPG going 60-65MPH the whole way. Combined, going to work, school, city, etc... is a crappy 15MPG. I have tested that mileage over the course of 2 months and it was 15.46-something every time I filled up.

My 1987 owner's manual recomends "91 RON (87 CLC or AKI rating on fuel pumps in U.S.A.) minimum."

Regular is all that is needed.

1988 would be different because it has the higher compression of the 944 and about 15 more horses.

Here is a thread of interest on the octane ratings found in fuel doors.
