Hi guys,

Whilst on Holiday in Dublin my car (924 N/A 1980) has been broken into and attempted to be stolen is a supposedly secure car park!!! The ignition switch has been ripped off leaving the wired exposed. I need to drive home from Ireland so need to either fix, or hotwire my ignition switch.

Could someone tell me which wires I need to join to;

A: start the car,
B: keep it running.

I've managed to get it to crank, but it won't fire and the battery charge is now getting low so I'm running out of trouble shooting time. Looks like there might be a fuel pump or coil connection that runs through the ignition switch that I'm missing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If your not comfortable posting how to hotwire the car on the web please PM me!!

Thanks in advance,

John

To hotwire the car... from the tech section:
Quote:
Ignition switch failure can easily be confirmed by hotwiring the car after removing the ignition switch connector from the back of the switch (just reach under the dash). The pin numbers are marked on the connector; jump 30 (battery) to 15 (ignition on) to turn on the ignition, and touch 30 to 50 (starter) to trigger the starter. Oh, don't forget to make sure it's out of gear! The car can even be driven in this state, if the key is used to retract the steering wheel lock - this is useful if your switch dies in the middle of nowhere, and all you have is a couple short bits of wire.

Only remaining question is can you tell which wires are which numbers?

Cheers, thanks for that. Well I managed to get home last night. Turned out my hot-wiring abilities were OK, but the immobiliser was damaged by the theiving scum, and was still cutting the fuel pump and coil when it was deactivated.

In a last ditch effort I cut the cable off an old oven that was lying in the "secure carpark" and jumpered the fuel pump to run all the time (I knew how to do it from using the CIS tester!), then ran a positive feed to the coil from the battery!

She survived the 6 hour drive like that with clingfilm windows no problem! A bit noisy though.

I'll post pictures of the damage soon but it's not a pretty sight. If anyone has a rust free guards red drivers door in the UK please let me know. The roof is bent too, rear quarter damaged, side windows smashed, ignition wires hot-wired and strangest of all, the steering column seems to be bent. The steering wheel is now at an angle to the driver. 4 inch gap to the indicator stalk, 1 inch gap to the wiper stalk. Made for an interesting drive!
