|
|
Understanding that there are always unforeseen circumstances that will increase costs, I would like to know what I may expect to spend in rebuilding a 924 Turbo engine.
I realize that this is a very general question, but I will apprecitate all input, from mild routine rebuild, to "worse case scenario" experiences are valuable to me in deciding whether to pursue a project that I have in mind.
Basically, I just want to weigh the cost of rebuilding a 924 Turbo vs some other options that are available to me.
Thanks! _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"

Not any more expensive than any other 8v engine, some details are a bit hard to find, and turbocharger rebuild will cost some extra. Things that are expensive are things you cant do self and have to let a "professional" do.. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

I agree with Cedric, not that bad. Things that add to the cost are expensive rings (path of least resistance = just buy custom slugs for $6-700), expensive clutch parts, and additional turbo overhaul costs ($3-400).
Pluses include several dirt cheap components, such as the water pump and gasket set. Minuses include refreshing all that rubber intake plumbing and rebuilding your WUR ($2-300). _________________ Toofah King Bad

I know my question is somewhat subjective, but I'm trying to compare costs of specific engines to determine what I want to use for a project that I have in mind.
I realize that I will need to pay for machine work since I no longer have an engine machine shop at my disposal, and may need to send the turbo out for rebuild as well. Basically what I'd like to know is roughly what the "real" costs are for the most common parts that require replacement in a normal rebuild and what (specific to the 924 Turbo engine) are the most common machining operations that are performed. For instance, hot tanking, a valve job and related head work is a given as may be the boring of the block, reconditioning the rods, and balancing the assembly etc. However I'd like to know if there are any other operations that this engine seems to need.
I guess an easier way of putting it is will it cost me $2000.00, $3000.00 more or less to completely rebuild the engine given that I will be doing the assembly? _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"
