Recently i've developed a small squeak that turns into a squeal when making gradual left turns at speed. i took the wheel off and realized it was horribly out of balance. but after replacing the wheel i still hear the squeal/whir. not as bad mind you. No play in the bearings and the axle shafts are pretty new.. any ideas as to what the noise is?

Not unless he has one of those ultra rare four wheel steering models.

brakes? or the center nut might be a little loose if it was taken off at any point. It's supposed to be at something like 220 ft lbs torque. I had mine at something like 90 lbs and it wooshed and squeaked untill it was corrected.

Ohhh I see the title says REAR wheel. I suppose a squeak when turning could also be a lack of elbow grease.

Rear wheel bearings are going dry.

When you replaced the axle shafts, did you inspect or replace, and repack the wheel bearings with a good grade of synthetic grease?

The original grease should have been replaced long ago, and if not, heat causes it to break down. This is especially bad on the left side because of the exhaust system.

While you are in there you should clean, inspect, and repack, the cv joints as well.

You could have a piece of dirt between the drum and the brake shoe, or a brake shoe is dragging.

Try adjusting the rear brake shoes (which should be done regularly) and see if the noise changes at all.

Either way, you'll likely get to pull the rear bearings and drums off to clean and service the system.

Pretty similar to a super beetle's rear brakes and suspension, lots of info on that on the 'net.

Bearing nut not torqued properly.. just paid 55 dollars for a man to turn a wrench.. fantastic.. but at least the problem is fixed and the noise has abated.
