The whole air-intake system from the air-mass meter to the throttle body must be sealed or it will be difficult to start and can be hard to rev. This also includes the AAV, though it's more likely to be something else amiss. Don't over-tighten the joins in the main ducting, either, as that can distort and break the seals.

The vacuum lines have several variations in different years and markets. My '82 one has a sealed off port in the air-mass meter, a port in the first boot that works with a port in the inlet manifold to drive the brake booster; a port in the second duct for the engine oil breather (and it's underneath so it's easy to miss), and a port in the throttle body for the vacuum advance. There's also a port in the last boot which goes to the AAV and that then goes to another port in the side of the throttle body near the CSV.

Mine had a bodgy repair in the breather host, which I've now replaced, a split in the second boot, also replaced, and was missing a clamp on one of the AAV connections, now fitted. The difference was obvious. It starts better and pulls easier in lower revs!

Wade.

I can't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure the vacuum advance goes to the throttle body, just before the throttle butterflies. ISTR the port is on the forward side.
