Does anybody know about this? Does the power cable from the generator have to go via the starter motor? Is this just a linked coupling? Or does it give power to the starter motor? (I can't figure this out!)

In the Haynes book one can see on the wiring diagrahm that the power out from the generator goes via the starter motor and then to the battery. Does this really make sense?

Thing is. My son changed the starter motor on his 1984 924. The car didn't charge afterwards. I thought this has something to do with the voltage regulator or the condensator. I changed these. But as I was to put the generator back, I noticed that the power-out cable from the generator was in a bad state. Due to heat build up close to the exhaust manifold maybe. This cable sould be renewed. I just wonder if I could just let it go straight to the battery instead of via the starter motor? Maybe I could avoid the heat from the exhaust for this cable as well?

Many thanks for help...

The generator cable can go straight to the battery rather than to the starter, i did this on one of mine and routed the cable well away from the exhaust straight to the battery. It only goes to the starter as a way of saving the amount of wiring needed.

i did mine about 7 years ago and been fine since, i also re-routed the small control wire from the generator to avoid the exhaust.

Same here- works fine.
I used the heaviest cable I could get my hands on.
