It died right here. I came to a stop right at that metal expander. I had a spare on in the glove box as was suggested and strongly encouraged. IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE GET ONE NOW!!! Or at the very least go to http://www.clarks-garage.com/ and check out the 'in-a-moment-of-desperation' work around.

The problem I had was that I was *not* about to crawl under my dash in the middle of a highway to replace the damn thing. I instead I popped the hood and the hatch and waited for AAA to get there to tow me to a parking lot (and wait for a few, I was afraid I may have killed the battery while desperately trying to get it to turn over, while traffic flies past me). But, once I got to the parking lot I had it running again in 3 minutes.

At my Father's suggestion one of my spring projects will be to re-wire the DME Relay and mount a jack in an easier, and faster, to reach location...

OMG - that's a bad spot to have a car die!

Once you replace the little sucker, it probably won't ever die again, but having a spare in the glove box is having peace of mind.

I read this post this morning, and this afternoon (after clearing another snowfall off the car/driveway) I decided to do some more cleaning. First thing I find in the glovebox is a spare DME relay. It appears to be unused, and in the original box, but I think I will swap it in to make sure it is not an old/dead one. It's really great to have these forums to sort out where to get started, and some of the basics you need to know.

My old one seemed to test OK by the meter. Then we spent 5 months of not starting....corresponding to the worst of my convelescence after a stroke last May.

We discovered a different problem by the firewall, fixed it and it still wouldn't start. In desperation, I apply my 2 year old "Clark's Rescue Tool" and it started.

Because I had to drive it to get it home (we had it in the barn 10 mi away) and then get to a new relay, I installed a rocker switch that allowed me to turn off the pump when I stopped - and before I turned the key to activate the pump.

That tool now resides beside the spare tire.
