I made a panel out of wood for my boost/vac guage and was going to paint it black, but I kind of like the wood.

IMHO woods nice if you have other matching trim pieces in wood grain, I also think woods better used in luxury sedans. Your interior is very nice but it's asking for it to be a satin black panel _________________ 1979 NA

I like the wood. Eventually, I intend to do much the same thing, replace the plastic panels around the gauges with a nice cherry veneer like that. I'll do that at about the same time I have the dash refurbished and recovered in leather. I think it looks really classy. _________________ Fred- 1979 924 |

Wood has no place in a German sports car, period!
If you want wood buy a Jaguar, Rover, Bentley, Rolls Royce or any piece of American automotive history, although most US cars wood is in fact plastic!! _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

at one time i made inserts and had most of the 924 n/a in a very nice simulated dark burl wood, though it came out very nice, i liked it for about three days and peeled it out. ymmv... _________________ Eric

I got wood,/ woods only good for molds though Ive only began to
think of interior trim pieces for my build. Aluminum is good for
trim pieces. Thats a good look. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

I must say I like black on black plastic, leather and carpet interiors the most. Dark leather and real wood follow that depending on the setup.
My least favorite interiors are wild colors, carbon fiber, over use of aliminum billet, cheap silver colored plastic trim, and fake wood stick on trim.
Wood has no place in a german sports car? Obviously carerra rsr is not a 356 fan. |

Oh yes I am. But the majority of Porsche in Europe have not been spec'd with wood. It's the US market that seems to think wood in sports cars is classy!
Certain cars work with wood. Many don't. A BMW 3 series should not have wood. A BMW 7 series can. Jaguar works with wood, (modern) Aston Martin shouldn't.
On the whole a 356 should have wood or any Porsche for that matter. My personal opinion.

the problem with wood is that unless it is very high quality, it is subject to environmental factors. ive seen very nice looking inserts swell, sweat and crack, or develop a haze. Its also more expensive to do correctly, and adds weight over plastics. I assume thats why most American manufacturers went to simulated wood (ie plastic) over the real thing.
As for the look, that's simply a personal preference, in my case, I found the look of wood in the 924 took away from the sporting looks. It just didnt pull it off like it did in the Jaguar, where the burl looked completely at home to me.
The OP did a really nice job with the gauge panel and it goes in theme with the shift knob, a few other small trim pieces might complete the effect.
The bottom line is do what you want to your car, your not here to impress us, if you like wood, add wood. And I think most of us are open minded enough to appreciate any job well done, even if its something we wouldn't want in our own cars. _________________ Eric

Its started with a shift knob, then a panel, kinda liked it and thought a few more panels would be better.........
