1200 dollars?

in Europe we have the highest prices for the 924...and we sell bare 924 engines for 400 euros...that 600-700 dollars depending on the parity...and i'm quite drunk now and i might overestimate the prices of the 924 more that i usually do

Hang in there fella! The '79 engine we talked about is about 10 times cheaper! Plus freight of course, and the usual beer allottment charge(s).

I guess 1000 dollars US are ok for that milage.Seem s to be fair.
Much cheeper than a rebuild. 14 years ago i bought a engine with 67000 km for 600 german mark, which is now a days 300 euros which is about 500 dollars US......

I buy engines for 150eur max... they don't run, but if I can see them running I wouldn't pay more than 400 for one...since for 1000 eur you can buy a driving 924.

I'd only pay more if the engine was rebuilt and hasn't run yet.

Taken from a search on Car-part.com on 1977 Porsche 924 engine, East Central region.

Year, Part, Model: 1981 Engine Porsche 924
Description: *-*924-68K,2.0,MT
Mileage: 68,000
Part Grade: A
Stock #: 9749
Price: $750
Dealer Info: Mitch's Auto USA-MI (Detroit) 313-365-4844

Lots more results there. Most yards will ship. Most yards don't deal via e-mail. Call them and have them perform a compression test on the motor before you buy (unless you just want a core to rebuild, then it doesn't matter that much) If they won't perform a compression test, then move on to the next yard in the list.

Note on shipping: If you can arrange to have it shipped to a business with a loading dock or held for pickup at a warehouse, then you'll save some money on the freight shipping. You'll just have to get from there to wherever it needs to be, but a rental pickup from the local Home Depot or car rental place is still usually less expensive than having the pallet transferred to a smaller truck with a lift to bring it to your house, etc.

If you want to discuss the following, PM. I think I might have what you're looking for, either as parts or a whole engine. Either option is cheaper than that. And I'm a lot closer.

My assumption was that there aren't too many good engines left. I'm looking to restore this car as best I can with what money I've got. I'd like the best engine I can buy. So i'd like an engine from a reliable source that knows how many miles are on it etc. I don't want to just toss another engine in and call it a day. 1200 really isn't much money for an engine in good repair that will last another 50K as far as I'm concerned but i'd certainly listen to whatever the leading opinion is on here. Bear in mind performance is the priority far more than cost.

Just my two cents...

It's clear that you are ready to plunk down $1200.00 for an engine that you've been told has 52K on it, but you haven't told us the history, leak down or compression figures...or if the seller is even a reliable source.

It also looks like you want to "plug and play" and not deal with any rebuilding issues...and please correct me if I'm wrong.

If I were in that situation, I'd probably be somewhat swayed into making my investment with a reliable member of the 924 community that has some respect for not only these cars, but his/her standing in the community also. This may seem to some as a weird reason for making a purchase, but I think that most folks that have a passion for a certain model of car also have a fair bit of knowledge about them AND if they sell something to someone in the same community that they want to be sure that whomever they sell something to is very satisfied.

Of course, there are the exceptions, but I think that you'll get genuine advise, and a good result if you study what has been posted by others here...and I'm certainly no expert, and I do respect many of the opinions posted by others.

In the end you are going to make your own decision as it's not up to this forum, but I personally think spending $1200.00 for an engine is way too much and I would rather spend the money rebuilding what I have and having the satisfaction of knowing what has gone into it...that to me would be a better choice of spending $1200.00 on an engine that could still be questionable.

OR, you could buy an engine from one of the board members as has been offered.

The issue with a rebuild is that I don't have the time, space or tools required. And after looking at the numbers it's far more expensive than simply replacing it. I'd love to buy from a member but I need specifics on the engines which I only seem to be able to get from auto yards. Nobody seems to know the mileage or other issues associated with the engines they have. Knowing that it runs is not enough information for me to make a decision like that.

What if you take yours into a shop and have them do a valve job, rings and bearings for you (long block) and you can do the rest? I don't think that would be much over 1200, if at all.
