Its a must for the 924 turbo ! especially if you're running higher than stock boost. i run 0.9bar
Wow...what a difference. The car is not a power ON/OFF monster anymore. You can actually drive it in the city, long trips are also nicer due to lower RPM at higher speeds. It smooths things out.
And then its the crispness of the shifter, the precision of the gear shift. The late gearboxes are MUCH better than the old ones.
i had the 944NA gearbox, the 2.0T chewed trough one 944 gearbox until now.
bottom line is: 944S2 gearboxes...YES...deff. a performance upgrade ! and a comfort upgrade. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

Everyone says the 931 is under powered for the longer gears of the 944s2/951 box... Is this not the case? 200hp is sufficient?
Second gear goes through 60 in that right? 90ish? in 3rd? _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

certainly does not feel underpowered to me, it still spins 17" fat wheels in second gear when max boost kicks in, so...
but its cold outside now and maybe thats why such loss of traction occurs.
i'd say 200HP is sufficient, hell..the S2 makes 210 and nobody complained that the 944S2 is underpowered or too tall geared.
i'll get some clear values of xx miles in x gear and post, but yea...what you wrote seems about right.
anyway...would be nice to see what happens performance-wise.
the 924 at 0.9bar makes about 200HP with proper CIS tuning and with a massive intercooler up front. Torque is about the same as the 944S2 but earlier. Now..they are evenly geared. The 924 is ~140Kg lighter tho.
The 44 takes 6 seconds to go from 0 to 60. i'm quite interested how the 924 will do _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

| Nice...been bangin' on about this forever...nothing to tall geared with the 210 engine, too short from 1-3 IMO... Snailshell? |

i only drove my snailshell for a couple of months 3 years ago but as i remember it the snailshell was about the same as this S2 gearbox when it comes to RPM / road speed.
drove it for ~100kms yesterday, drives great, you can drive fast with low RPM or superfast with moderate RPM. best fuel consumption is at ~130km/h(80mph) ~3400RPM...it sits at maximum vacum there....so there's the optimum fuel consumption.
havent had the chance to test the 60mph in second but i got the following values:
2500RPM at 60km/h in fourth or 2800RPM in third <--for city cruising
3200 RPM at 120Km/h in fifth <-- for long drives
@4000 RPM at 160Km/h ?!? not really sure about this as there was trafic...but 4000RPM at 100mph sounds about right. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

Agree completely. The whole gearing = underpowered thing really is a myth. I have a track 924S with an S2 3 liter and a 944T gearbox with LSD. The latter is even higher than the S2 box, but again, the car has no problems with acceleration, and the bonus is that 1st gear is usable and a real gear. I think the original first gear must have been designed by spiderman when he wanted to drive his car vertically up a wall or something.. |

I found that the best of the Audi bunch was the 944S box for a hot 931 (200-225bhp).
I'm still a dogleg diehard though.
A bog standard 944 box like some markets got is just about ok on a de-tuned example. |

I made a comparison table based on data from some of the links on Ideola's site.
The snail shell is actually a really nice blend (on paper at least) of high speed cruising and lively low down quick shifting. I've bought a 944S box for mine which IIRC is not much different to the standard 944 box - mainly cos it was cheap. 944T and S2 boxes are much bigger money in the UK - in the region of £500.
Nice to hear some real world experience - paper is all well and good but it's your ass dyno that really matters!!!!
I'm in work at the min but will post up my table when I get home later. _________________ UK spec '83 N/A with 931 motor with Eaton MP62 'charger @ 15psi. EFI - 565cc inj. Standalone Adaptronic ECU. 951 FMIC. Ally rad. Twin throttle. Recirc valve. Custom manifolds and CAI. 232bhp |
