a/f mixture adjustment. turning the 3 mm allen wrench clockwise or counterclockwise which one enriches or leans out the mix. ive played with it slightly but i dont want to make anything worse. I turned this about a quarter turn each way but didnt notice much difference. anyway turning the wrench each way does what? any warnings about turning too much each way. thanking you all in advance. question 2, ive snooped around and checked out cats for california/ ebay about 200.00 bucks for a ca compliant. anyone purchase one of these or have any advice on where to find a deal on a new cat for my baby-must be california model, was wondering if they are good or not. thanks!!!

In is richer, and out is leaner. If you can turn the screw 1/4 rotation without much change, then the idle mixture is about where it should be.

I have a cat that was supposed to be from a VW MKII Jetta that actually looks exactly like the original cat that was on my 81 924, which is a three way cat (supposedly better than the one that should be on your 79).

If you want it, you can have it for $75 AS-IS. If it's no good, it's worth more than that if you take it to a Primary Cat Recycler (not those guys that buy cans), so at $75 FIRM, you can't lose. I took a couple VW dead cats to the recyclers (down in Anaheim) about a month ago (going price was $150 each at that time), and held onto this one, because I'm pretty sure it's still good.

If you still have your old cat, you can also take it down there and sell it.

I'm in Rialto, if you want to come take a look, so you don't have to drive far.

PM me if interested.

counterclockwise is lean minute movement and patience is the key.remove the wrench birp the throttle and check level again.
Take your time a subtle movement on this will make a huge difference
An indicator is too lean, the engine will start to stumble(missfire)this means you're close...timing must be dead on or it makes things f---ed up
patience and a gentile touch will get you there
NOTE:a slight turn of the"screw" can make awhoppin' dif
there is an old method that applies to carbs called lean rollover I'm sure there are more learned people on this list that will inform you better than I hope this helps.....Pete

A quick word about messing with the mixture: don't do it until your valve clearances are set, your vac leaks are cured and you've got all new filters and spark plugs properly gapped, and your spark timing is on the money or very close. Make tweaking the mixture the last step in your tune-up. You'll also find more latitude in your spark timing depending on where you set the mixture.
