I got myself a '77 924 but don't if it is from the first half of '77 or the second. Can anyone give me some hints to know how old it is?
Thanks,
~Frank |

Well you could measure the crankshaft diameter...
Seriously, do you have a VIN number? _________________ 1979 924 NA race car H-Prod SCCA

Thanks for telling me, but I thought there were some things on the car that would make it noticeable from what part of '77 it was from. Here's my VIN number, however: 9247207693.
Thanks for the help,

The engine code is the big one - that's on the back of the block, under the coil. I believe we have the listing in either the 924 FAQ or the 944 FAQ... the first two letters (like XE or XF, IIRC) will distinguish the build level... _________________ Vaughan Scott

There's a model outline here, in the 924 FAQ (Whaddaya know?! There's frequently asked questions about these cars! ) The link to which is staring you in the face right next to the picture of the day, above.
Some links (in the Links forum, wouldn'tcha know it?) to option codes and such are here.
If you really are 15, then you probably know the Worldwide Interwebs like the back of your hand. Try familiarising yourself with this 'board (yes, that will involve reading!) and using the search function (you can search in Google, y'know?). We understand the noob predicament -and realise the 'board search is not the most intuitive thing in the world. And for the most part don't mind helping out. But just a heads-up; asking us to search out every little thing for you (especially stuff that's been covered ad nauseum) will do nothing to ingratiate yourself with the group... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

| My dad has a early 77 and I have a 78 and one of the differences I noticed was the location of the windshield wiper resivour. In the early 77 its in a bracket closer to the center of the motor bay and it just slides out, in the 78 its behind the passenger side headlight and has a few bolts you need to remove to take it out. |

Thanks for the advice. And Khal, I'll take you're advice and do some research. Thats not saying that I haven't done any yet, though. I've read pretty much every book on the 924 I can find, and I couldn't find anything about how to know whether a '77 924 was from the first or second half of '77, so I thought I'd just ask.
Thanks very much,
~Frank |

A perfectly legitimate question for a noob. As I re-read my post, I realised it may have come across as a bit terse. It wasn't meant to, just trying to let you know up front, search first.
That being said, there's a few of us who've been here way too long, and some others that have been here longer still. Perhaps we're too dismissive sometimes when something we've seen ten times isn't obvious to someone else... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Now I do have a question about this as well, I always thought mine was a 1977. But, I noticed the sticker in the drivers side with closer inspection says 76' as well as the manual. Unfortuantly I cannot see what is on the engine. Is it really by the sticker? Could this really be a 76'? _________________ Porsche 924 |

I'd love to do the drive train but due to the lack of info I'm a little in the dark.It would be nice to pre-order parts (Ideola) but You can see my dilema.Anyone shine any light?I fell in love with 24 20 years ago now I drive it daily(except when it snows CALGARY DRIVERS ARE IDIOTS).Ihave read &$#@ near everything on 924.org,but because I am a "newbie/noobie i am asking for any insight that may help. Pete

As Khal's 944 FAQ Model Outline link points out - cars with the engine code of XH or XF will be early '77, whereas late '77 (aka '77.5) will have the XE or XG code.
Furthermore, as a general indicator, early '77 cars will have been built in late '76, and late '77 cars will have been built in early '77 - if you have the date sticker still showing.
My old '77.5 was built in May '77, IIRC. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Nada
It had A shit paint job and an air conditioner put into it(another shit job)after market I believe cccool or somesuch thing. When these "jobs" where done they pulled the plates off and didn't put them back..BONEHEADS. Since then I've stripped it down to bare metal and repainted to its original color(colour) vw95f .That's why I come across as a dummy.VIN& ENG# is all I've got. Also the electrics were REALLY butchered! It runs like a top now but it's been a major PITA.I'd next like to do the total drivetrain and am trying to avoid any parts availability problems.
The EGR system is GONE to me this was foolish 'cause when you put your foot into it ,it shuts off and vacuum like a turbo is free.Porsche/Vw did a lot of good work so why &*ck it up?
Thanks for your time guys I've rebuilt a lot of engines and know what can happen.I've got a turbo corvair that pushes 200 HP (forged pistons three angle valve job water/alcohol injected balanced etc.)Call me tight-assed but why do it twice?
Thanks again MrPete _________________ '77 924
