Okay so I have tried quite a few different car chargers, but nothing fits snug into the socket. I am guessing the socket is not US?

In any case, I am pretty certain the socket is non-functional.

What should I look for about installing a socket that will work with the car, and also work to charge items such as my GPS and Phone?

ive used mine before but as you discovered, most plugs fit pretty loose.

i am thinking about hooking up a cellphone charger behind the dash so i can just run a micro usb cable in an inconspicuous location. i would do the same with the gps. i hate exposed wires hanging everywhere...

You can install a US version in the same space and solve the problem for less than $10.
