My beloved 88 924s is slowly starting to shit out, its lost alot of power over the year that ive owned it, it has an exhaust leak right before the cat, and its slower than usual when using the kick down accelerator. I just want it to run like it used to and want that quick car I used to have, any suggestions to where I should start? I really appreciate any feed back, im in love with this car as im sure most of you are too

Have you checked the cat to see if it might be plugged?

If you want, you can come here www.nelsonstonebarn.com and I have a car lift. Not too far from Woodbury, we can pull the cat-back exhaust off and have a peek at the cat. Then, I can see an actual '88 in person and verify they exist!

You can't just pull the cat off on a 2.5L engine. The cat is welded to the collector/downpipe for the exhaust manifold.

You can take the cat/collector pipe loose at the connection for the pipe that goes over the axle (shine a light up to the cat?), or take the collector loose from the exhaust manifolds (not much you're going to see from there).

Sounds to me more like deferred maintenance to me. Knows an exhaust leak, but won't fix it? That's the kind of Owner that also has the FOES past due, wornout sparkplugs, and vacuum leaks in the intake tract. All of which lead to reduced power, and lead to broken belts and expensive repairs.

You've owned the car for a year. Have you done, or had the FOES (front of engine service) done? If not, do you have in your posession written proof/documentation that shows that the FOES have been performed on the engine in the past three years or 30K miles and when it was done, exactly what was done, and what was replaced? If not, the engine should not even be started or run until the FOES is completed. You might even find after the past due FOES is completed that the engine is running properly.

yes I had the FOES done about two or three weeks into owning the car, and im very tight on cash right now so I cant afford to have anything major redone to the engine at the moment, as far as the exhaust leak goes I can do it myself but I dont have the right tools anymore and im not gonna take it to a shop to spend 30 bucks for a seal weld on my cat haha so I think im gonna go to grennadiers to check it all out, Thanks for the suggestions guys I really appreciate it

Can you tell us what other work you've done on the car since you've owned it? Didn't you do some other exhaust work?

After a quick look-see on Matt's car, the exhaust pipe to cat joint is cracked almost all the way around. Did a goober mig-weld job to reseal it. Most likely will have to be removed by 'competent' exhaust welder in the near future! Matt needs to buy new gaskets up stream so we didn't do a proper job. Also, looks like the OEM plugs/wires/cap/rotor are still in the car. He needs to replace those along with the O2 sensor. Car is in great shape, beautiful paint and interior. Off idle, the car shudders and you can hear/feel it resonate the entire length of the exhaust system, hence the crack.

If this is an automatic, check the damper (in the bell housing).

Warning ! ! !

Don't buy anything from automobile atlanta.

If you order over the phone, or on the internet, they always say they have everything in stock when in fact, they won't order some of the bits, until after they charge your credit card. AA charges outrageously high shipping charges based on the amount ordered, not the actual cost of shipping (I've been charged $25 for shipping on each $100 of parts ordered, and we're talking tuneup parts (small/light).

The last time I ordered from them I got charged $77 on $300 parts. Most of the stuff was junk and I returned it. The cost of return shipping was $13. And it took them six weeks to finally issue a credit for the $300. They would not refund you my money. And they told me to place another $300 order to use the credit slip, would cost me another $77 in shipping charges.

Not to worry, just 'borrowed' a couple of pics to show Matt the parts.
