PostPosted: Mon Jun 14, 2010 6:58 pm    Post subject: VW : Struts/Shocks Help Reply with quote

I got my car yellow stickerd and had to take it over the pits again. The guy failed me for having about 1cm of play in my struts when the car is jacked up. A mechanic friend of mine told me all the VW Struts got that play in it , is this True or do i need to replace my struts? Im scared if i do replace it and i still got that play in it the guy would have wasted $300 of my money!!

Thanks

Is it a VW, or a Porsche?

VWs do have some play when you jack the car up, because they don't have strut mounts that are bolted to the inner fenders like the 924/931/924S/944/951 family does.

Are you asking about front struts that are installed in a 924, OR front struts that are installed in a VW (like a Jetta or Golf)?

Motorcycle Fork Oil (Med/Heavy 15W) 250ml per side

(new oil is a good investment as the stock shocks are made by Koni, much better quality than some after-market insert for £100 per side)

But if you have play, be sure to clean the valves in the shock while you have it apart.

How-to / Stock Shock Absorber Refurbishment

Ok , Got the oil , Got my O-rings (lower one i could not find so i got a round one and when i pushed it in it cut some of the "round-ish" bit off now its also flat and its a nice fit)

When do i put in the oil? Do i poor it in before putting the last part on before screwing it close? ( the part with the top O-ring)

Thanks

Be carful about cutting seals
I would guess that the play you have been talking about is free movement before and resistance kicks in when extending and compressing the shock. This is more likely to be the bottom or plunger valve not closing quick enough due to crap. The bottom one is more prone to this as this is where the sediment sits from aged oil. Take them apart and clean them in coca-cola. The plunger seal sits baggy anyway, (a bit like a piston ring) but will seal once in. Its a bit fiddly to get back in the tube as you have to compress it with your fingers.

The "o-ring" on the top cap will be fine if you have had to trim it a little.

Put the end valve on the bottom of the tube, put the plunger in the tube, place the assembly in the strut leg, push the plunger down so the shock is compressed, pour in the oil, (it doesn't matter if you get some in the outer as well as the inner of the tube) then push the top assembly with oil seal into the top of the strut. This is a bit fiddly as the top cap centralizes the inner tube. Then screw the retaining cap down.

You then need to extend and compress the shock a couple of times to prime it.

Hey

9xxGirl , can u mayb tell me how that valve(the one which doenst need the bolt removed to get out) comes together again?

Ive put evrything back again , and now my strut goes down easy and comes out really hard. If im correct the strut needs to go in and out equally hard?

Thanks

Ok if it goes down easy but comes up with resistance its the bottom valve not closing correctly.

Correct me if i am wrong? You want to know the order of assembly for these parts.

Don't tell me you have taken BOTH apart without noting the order.

You are lucky, i have one that is not in a strut. I will take it apart and post pics, but it may take a couple of days as i'm up to my eyeballs
