So...i was driving nicely at about 150km/h and i was just doing a WOT thing going up a hill...when i hear this grinder noise.

i let go of the pedal...i press it again..there goes the grinder noise again.

i slow down...park...look at the engine...all running nice and smooth..everything at its place.

i go to the back..look at the gearbox and driveshafts..they look intact.

i try to drive it..a clonking noise seems to come from the back when the car is in gear and rolling.

to have it towed..i'd have to take the front bumper off...to have it on a platform costs way to much...and i figured: whatever let go...needs replacement anyway...so i've put it in first gear and slowly rolled home...clonking all the way.

my first thought was that one of the screws of the TT cuplor got unscrewed and was hitting the TT case as the main shaft rotates...but a close inspection revealed that those screws are ok and tight.

it shifts easly into all gears as before...its just when rolling in gear it makes this clonking noise and i can feel the vibration given by the rotating object that colides with something else.

i say the differential let go....any predictions?

Had a similar experience in a 1973 Chrysler Newport, a big boat by anyone's standards! Made a horrible noise from the rear-end when accelerating, not much when at crusing speed. Tore apart the rear axle, and the pinion gear lost a couple of teeth. One lost tooth might not make as much noise but two consecutive ones do!

Any chance it's just a bad CV? Maybe one of the bearings got worn so bad it's popped out of it's race? Lowered car height will put the CVs at a more acute angle and could induce add'l wear.

Just trying to be optimistic for ya!

yep...been thinking about that too...i've checked the CVs last night by hand...just tried to feel the rubber hooses for anything abnormal..but could not find anything(just like feeling for lumps in a woman's breasts )....i'm going to try and check again today...maybe i dont need to pull the gearbox.

I agree with Dave. I broke a tooth off the ring gear in 356 Porsche gearbox and it made a clunk, clunk, clunk sound when rolling. It was louder under accelleration.
Pull the drain plug and look for scrap metal.

Or, it might even do the opposite!

yep...my CV axles sit parallel to the ground.

just took the drain plug out and let some oil pour...and yes...there are metal flakes...so its the differential that has gone.

so 924s can kill 944 gearboxes

oh well...i always wanted a taller gear gearbox...now is the chance.

Mmmmm, tempting..., but oh how much that shipping would be.

I bet ring&pinion. They're a common failure in the 944 box. Jump over to pelican and do a search on R&P or "ring and pinion" and you'll find all kinds of carnage...

not interested in repairing the old gearbox..it has a worn 2nd gear syncro that always annoyed me so i'm happy it is dead...i was planing to replace it anyway since quite some time now..

i dont know Rasta...can you get a quote of shipping to RO?
i dont remember the price you asked for that gearbox..PM me again please.

i've got a deal for a NA 944 unit for 400 euros...shipped.

if you can go anywhere near that...i'll wait the extra 2-3 weeks it takes to come from the USA to europe and RO.
