the master cylinder fails on me while I'm driving the 914. Yay!
Ever have one of those weeks where you just wanna scream and break some shit? Seriously just want to scream. Timing belts on the Ducati, wiring gremlins on the zx2, engine rebuild on the 924, working on the airflow sensor on the 944 (and more wiring gremlins) and then routine maintenance on the 250... then the exchanger seals and exhaust fixes and valves and pushrod seals on the 914...
Ahhhh ... everything is done. I can finally drive. OH JUST KIDDING I HAVE NO BRAKES!
Ok rant over.

Is the car OK? Good news is, 911 master bolts in for superior braking. As in, superior to a 911. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Yeah car is fine, didn't hit anything and stopped just in time.. Wasn't a pleasant experience. BUT I do have the 19mm 911 master cyl to replace it. _________________ - 1977 Porsche 924 2.0 N/A (Trackday Project)

Gee... I was thinking....NO!!! Not another accident as I began reading!
Glad you & the car are good! Did you use your hand/emergency brake to stop?
Not many people do it... but if you 'keep the hand brake button in' and while lifting the hand brake you can use the emergency brake as it was designed and help slow you down in an emergency.
You keep the button pushed in so that when you hear/feel the brakes lock up you just let the handle down then pull back up.
I never did understand why the yank tanks had foot emergency brakes because they lock up the brakes in an emergency and if you reach down for the release lever you can't see the road.
It takes a long time to master and to have it happen as second nature but just as part of your normal driving routine just do 'hand brake stops' to learn how quickly it will take to slow you down and practice modulating the hand brake so you don't lock the rear wheels. Then have someone test you by saying 'hand brake stop' (or something like it) when you're not expecting it.
Did you know my Fiat 600 had copper brake lines 'from the factory?' At least I know they won't erode. _________________ 1980 Turbo

It was weird because I figured something was wrong, I came to a stop and my pedal had a lack of pressure. I went "oh god.. please no. This is bad." as I came to the next stop just to anticipate I tested the pedal. Sure as hell, no brakes. I quickly applied pressure with the e-brake to start slowing down while pumping the brake, eventually it built SOME pressure, wasn't much, but helped...
The e-brake didn't really have enough oomph to do a lot, but if I planned accordingly would work enough to stop in most cases. What I quickly learned was that if i pumped the brake I could get enough pressure for a short enough time to come to a stop.
If I hit the brake, no pressure. Pump the brake like a son of a bitch for a few seconds and it would build pressure. Holding the foot down with pressure would keep the pressure. Let off, re-apply, gone.
Would appear my master cylinder has completely gone to crap. This happened once before, but it was for such a brief moment I thought perhaps there was simply air in the line. I bled the brakes and all seemed well. I realize now, due to the symptom, it was cause for a master cylinder issue, not air.
What I had to do was use a mixture of my e-brake and my brakes. Pump the brakes enough to get pressure to begin to stop and use the e-brake to also apply. It wasn't holding well on hills, so using the e-brake on hills to keep me rolling backwards worked fine while I fluttered the clutch and gas to get me up hills. It got me home in a pinch. I'm just glad I learned to do that when I was younger when my dad said "You never know when someday your brakes go out and you need to learn this..."
As rasta mentioned the 19mm is an upgrade, I do have one, so that's going in on my upcoming day off. Really wasn't looking forward to doing brakes but whatever lol.
I totally agree that the foot e-brakes are retarded. _________________ - 1977 Porsche 924 2.0 N/A (Trackday Project)

I have pictures of it stripped down to the frame, it's not finished yet though. If you're still interested I can post some stuff. _________________ - 1977 Porsche 924 2.0 N/A (Trackday Project)

Good job on not having an accident! Sucks though.
I'd read somewhere that the 914's can stand to have their master cylinder mounting areas beefed up to improve pedal feel and reduce the chance of a failure in the mounting solution used.
Not sure if you want to tackle something like that while you've got so many other things going on, but it seems to be a good thing to look into. _________________ Stefan
