k, so. i need the firing order, and possibly a diagram to tell me where 1,2,3,and4 are on the distributer, and where 1,2,3and 4 are on the block. also, somtimes when i go to start, it pops and i get smoke coming from the exaust side of the engine. if anyone can tell me whats wrong with my car, id appreciate it. currently my firing order is either 4321, or 1234 _________________ '79 924

firing order should be 1-3-4-2 with #1 at the front of the engine (cam gear)
On the distributor there should be a notch and with the flywheel mark at 0, the rotor on the distributor should be at the notch.
The rotor turns clockwise, so if you've got 1, just connect the wires the right way... _________________ "Rule: Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun." (C. Bell)

On the block, the spark plugs are 1-2-3-4, starting from the front of the car and moving toward the back.
In order to properly index the distributor, you have to put the cam gear at TDC. The lettering on the cam sprocket should be facing the windshield. If it's facing the front of the car, the cam sprocket is on backward and you need to take it off and install it correctly.
Once you know the cam sprocket is on the correct way, there is a little dimple on the back side (same side as the lettering) that should line up with the pointer on the top of the cam cover. This is TDC.
Now, remove the distributor cap. The rotor should be pointing at a little tiny scribe mark on the lip of the metal distributor housing, just to the right of the electrical connection. If it's not, then the distributor is not indexed correctly.
To index correctly, disconnect the electrical lead, and remove the 13mm nut on the retaining "fork", and remove the retaining fork. Carefully lift the distributor up and out. Find the scribe mark. Position the rotor about 10° or so to the right of the scribe mark. When you insert the distributor, the rotor will rotate slightly back to the left. Once you have the distributor seated, rotate it slightly in whatever direction it needs to go to get the rotor to point exactly at the scribe mark. Once you have this lined up, replace the retaining fork and the 13mm nut, and snug it down. Reattach the electrical lead.
Now, but the distributor cap back on. One of the leads should be oriented exactly with where you left the rotor pointing. This is plug wire #1. Connect it to the front most spark plug. Going in a clockwise motion, connect the next distributor cap lead to the #3 spark plug. Next one to #4, and the last one to #2. The firing order is 1-3-4-2, and this is how to verify you have it installed correctly. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
