|

Well, after the 1.5 years of owning a 924 with title issues, I've finally got one I'll be able to put in my name. I picked up another 1980 NA. This one needs a fuel pump, but it looks like that's currently the only mechanical thing wrong with it. I'm going to take the pump out of the parts car and put it in there to check it out. The parts car is going to its new home soon, so I'll need to put it back, but then I'll know for sure that's all it needs.
I took a couple pictures of it and put them on my site. I'll have some more money to put into it later this Summer and may even be able to drive it at an autocross. I'm pretty excited to be able to start doing some car stuff again. |

Nice find, best of luck getting it sorted. If you do find that the fuel pump is the issue, I've been seeing a Walbro pump on eBay that appears to have the correct specs for <$100. I don't know the reliability of these, but Walbro is a US company with a pretty decent reputation. Just make sure you retain the check valve from your old pump, as it's not clear that it's included with the Walbros. Just do a search for "porsche 924 walbro" and it should come up. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

how long have you owned it? Only time will tell! Good luck haroldk, but they always need something i guess! After 30 years the newness starts to wear off a bit
But then how many makes and models of cars are still usable after 30 years without restoration? Not many!!!! Well not on this damp island anyhow. _________________ 924 (84) N/A 2 ltr - 5 Speed - BLACK - Project (looking for 200BHP, any ideas!)

nice job Harold! If you need a spare engine, I have a fairly clean big valve headed n/a engine from Arizonia if ya need one, cheap.
Oh yeah you'll definitly need three spare 4-spd trannies as well! I have some interior bits in that color as well. Not sure what, and door panels to match, but left those in NM. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Dan:
The previous-previous owner removed the pump, so I don't have the original to remove. Is the check valve on the inline pump or the in-tank pump, though? I was just going to get a Bosch pump from Rock Auto. A lot of the Turbo Ford guys ran into a counterfeit Walbro scam on eBay a few years back, but I'm sure if it's a reputable seller there wouldn't be a problem.
9XX Girl (I've somehow forgotten your real name):
I picked this one up on Thursday evening. At a bare minimum I'll need to do some brake work and adjust the clutch, too, but it appears the engine may run once I get some fuel to it.
I was looking for a project car anyway. If I wanted something that would run all the time I'd get another Focus. I've got a soft spot for cars that are more adventure than reliable transportation. :)
Dave:
I was actually going to get in touch with you about some parts once I've got some more money from a side-job I'm doing this Summer. I was planning on going an engine swap with EFI, but a big-valve head would be a nice stop-gap. I also wanted to see if you had a rear bumper and a 5-lug setup with wheels I could weasel out of you. I want to say there was something else, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't 3 4-speeds. :) We'll have to talk... |

I ended up needing to get signatures from the PO and the PPO on a form because the guy I bought it from hadn't transferred the title when he bought it a year ago. I drove around for over 3 hours on Saturday and got everything I needed from them. I just got back from the DMV and am now officially the owner of the car. I've kept the collector plates that were on it so I don't need to buy tabs every year and I only need to run one plate.
I spent some time messing with it yesterday and got a couple things done. I verified that the in-tank pump works as it should and I replaced a couple broken vacuum lines under the hood to help ensure an easier time starting it once I get the inline pump installed.
I'll need to replace the battery tray (huge surprise, huh?), but the floor under the tray is solid and the paint it shiny.
The brakes are basically non-existent, but we'll see what the problem is before getting to worried about it. I really don't want to replace hard lines just because I hate working with the stuff, so I'm hoping it's a rubber line or a bad seal somewhere. |

Drums are probably just out of adjustment. They lack auto-adjusters, so you have to crawl under the car on a regular basis and adjust them manually.
This is one of the major advantages to the 5-lug setup, as disk brakes do not require periodic adjustment. _________________ 78 924 NA

Yeah, I'd thought about that, but this thing was on the road until it was taken out of service because of the fuel pump. There is no brake action at all, and I don't think anybody would be able to drive it like that. Well, OK, they could drive it, but there's no front-end damage on the car, so I don't think it's likely. :) |

Hey Harold, yup, I do have a 5-lug setup for sale, just that it's still on one of the cars I brought back from Arizona. So, come on down to take a look when you get a chance. Not sure of it's value, however, do some research and pop me a price~!

I'll look around, but it seems a going rate is about $500. I'd probably end up putting them on here so I can do it in my own time. I'm likely to want to go through other stuff while I'm in there, too.
What were you thinking about for the engine? You said cheap, but I don't really have any idea at all what these things go for in stock form, let alone with head work. |

Today I went and got some supplies so I could work on the 924, but I couldn't actually do anything.
I took a trip to see Dave on Monday and my wife's car was acting up. I ended up driving her to work and then I figured I'd take her car to see what was wrong with it. I got about 1/4 the way to Dave's place and it stalled out hard. I managed to get it home, but had to use my free time today to actually fix the problem. I was pissed.
Anyway, I left Dave's place with a rear bumper, a pair of seat sliders, a clutch cable and a fuel door. I was able to put the fuel door and the bumper on, at least. While I was running around getting parts for the wife's car I picked up some hose to connect my fuel pump. I'm hoping I can actually fire it up this weekend. I still need to pull the valve cover and make sure the oil tube is alright and tighten up the alternator belt, but I'm hoping we'll get it making some noise.
Wish me luck! |

And I finally got to spend some time with it today. I popped in the fuel pump. It starts right up, but it only runs for about 2 seconds before shutting back off again. I've ordered up a CIS tester from Dan because I don't feel like just bashing my head against the wall. I've also got a copy of the Bosch CIS book.
Anybody else notice the Porsche manual says not to perform any of the adjustments unless the engine is running correctly? If it was running correctly why would I need to adjust anything?
I also found my brake problem. The line to the left rear wheel had a hole in it just aft of the T from the master. As I was pulling that line (which was all but welded into the T) the line from the master broke. So now I've got something like 15 feet of line to buy so I can run new ones. At least the other lines look to be in good shape.
Also, my power bleeder is very efficient at pushing brake fluid through pinholes in rusty brake lines. I managed to get almost a quart through that tiny hole before I figured out it was leaking and relieved the pressure. |
