Hi folks!
On my last trip to the Nurburgring while stuck in traffic and after 'enthusiastic' laps my S2 Turbo got warmer than I would have liked!
As it's a Toy for track days etc what is the best way to improve cooling? looking at my Dads 2.6 V6 Audi the rad has twin fans and looks beefier, would it fit? _________________ '81 932

Do a search. . .changing two components (thermostat, radiator temp switch) you can easily change the operating range of your motor (assuming radiator is functioning properly. . .you can have it flushed when you have the system drained). _________________ Toofah King Bad

Have you made any of the above/or other mods for your racing? _________________ '81 932

Check every part of your system, if your car is stock there is no need to modify something that worked great! I´ve been stuck in traffic in hot sun and the needled didnt move across the middle zone for 1.5 hour (then the traffic finally went better). I also been racing around both tracks and autocross courses without any problems, check that your fan is engaging correctly and that you have a clean radiator and that the thermostat works, _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

If you still have the a/c unit, turn it on high when hot. Works! _________________ '83 944 Track car.

I'd be surprised if your car doesn't already have dual fans. Does your car have air? If it does, and it's a track car, removing the A/C condenser will improve air flow thru the rad. In addition to the usual preventive maintenance items that Rasta mentioned (thermostat, fan switch, new coolant, radiator flush, and proper system bleed), there are a few other things you can do to optimize the performance of your cooling system.
Make sure your t-stat and fan switch are a matched pair, as there are at least two (and maybe three) different temp ranges. The OEM spec is an 87°C fan switch with a 92°C t-stat; the colder range is a 75° fan switch with a 82°C t-stat. You want to make sure you don't have the wrong combination, otherwise the fan and t-stat will either be fighting each other, or too far apart. (If interested, you can order all of the necessary bits from my website on my Kits by Repair Group page. Scroll down to see the cooling system stuff).
Here are some add'l links to ideas on how to improve the cooling system performance. The biggest opportunity on the 931 is improving coolant flow thru the head by removing the rear water flange and putting an equally sized connection there to tie into the cross over pipe. The OEM rear water flange is significantly smaller at the back of the head than the connection at the front, so this restricts flow at the rear of the head and causes 3 & 4 to heat up under hard driving.

Dan, am I right in thinking you were going to have some of these rear-of-head water outlets made as part of Ideola's Garage? And what did you do with heater and sender issues? _________________ 80/81 932/8 ROW |

Hadn't worked on duplicating these, but certainly could look into it.
For the UWB project, and probably also for the Club Sport project, I'm planning a heater delete, so there's no issue there. I haven't determined what to do on the Club Sport regarding the Thermo Time Switch (TTS) and Coolant Temp Switch, but on the UWB, the former is unnecessary, and the latter will be installed elsewhere using a standard GM type sensor and plugged into my ECU. On the Club Sport, I'm retaining CIS, so I have to figure out what to do yet. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made

AC is very rare on UK cars so miost likely a single fan.
Dan: Did you change the diameter of the water pipe down the side of the block too? From memory it's only a 1/2" bore. _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

I haven't installed this yet, but the plan is to run a standard Samco water hose from rear to front. IIRC, the diameter is somewhere around 22mm-25mm, so I do plan to run a larger hose. This was all implemented and validated by Steve Bassington, I'm just copying his implementation. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

If that is the case, then I would definitely look into installing a dual fan shroud setup from an A/C equipped car, as the add'l fan definitely helps with cooling. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
