Hallo

Life is full of funny quirks.
Once upon a time, a young fellow being 17 was full of expectations and dreams about ... cars.
So at 17, the Carrera GT was presented, somehow this was going to be mine, maybe not for my 18th birthday, but mine it will be.
As my father back then had a 911, we were invited to the intro of the car, what a day, don't ask me what was served, back in those days the cars were the centerpiece, the red carpet was for the car and enthusiasts. And the caterer was not the centerpiece.
It was a silver one !!
...
The years went on, I got hold of the dad's old '11 and I started to get into the line.
Then early 90's, the bug stroke back. My wife was tempted by the M3 Evolution, but at 600 pieces and not being a BMW fan I let go the possibility to strike. The Mrs was not really happy .

So as a diversion of the '11 and their constant attention when driving (Mrs quoted here), I resurrected the Carrera GT.
So everything, a Mrs car for the weekend ougth to be, big boot (well compared to an '11 it's big) less tax (2L) etc etc ...
I won't tell the journey as in those days a decent GT was very difficult to find. Rapidly, I was drawn to Germany due to the added bonus of the big fuel tank and the 100's delivered new there.

After a lot of searching and bringing a 2.4 back in the early days (did I say I am into '11) I stumbled upon an add in Auto, Motor und Sport, a guy advertised a first owner one with 59000 km on it in silver.

The next weekend, we headed to his hometown, needless to say we couldn't get any further into Germany than this very town.
The guy's garage was filled to the brim with german exotics, and needed the spot for a new car (incidently a 930 '89 with the 5-box) so after 3 trips and countless discussions, at that time my wife's interest shifted to a 356, we finally took the GT, to bring back home.

Interestingly, due to an accident, she had to drive the car for a 3 months stint waiting for her new workhorse to arrive.
After 3 days she had me, to call the garage to do whatever possible to shorten the delivery of the new one, because the GT is a horrible car just plain funny when at 9 or 10/10

So the love story was not starting on the right foot, and I have to admit, she was right, once the novelty disappeared, the GT languished in the corner of the garage and finally was in the back and only took a spin for the visit to the garage and the annual inspection, this is going on for the last 15 years now.

Suddenly 3 weeks ago, she saw an E30 M3 passing by on full song, the young guy had equipped it with a Supersprint race exhaust, raaaggghhh.

Was I going to loose my GT that bears all my memories to one song, so hence my start on the net to get ideas to revitalize it and maybe keep it in the garage in a less dark corner.

That's the journey to this forum.
So you've got the background and insight on the story, now the question.

As this stuff was not made in big numbers, I'm looking for ideas for an exhaust. Nothing being available of the shelf. Haven't asked Porsche yet !
Any ideas or suggestion for building one or modifying the OEM are welcome.
Maybe a new tune will save it from the block, so don't do it for me do it for the GT.

For the curious, it now has something like 79000 km on the trip. So we have added nearly 1000 km a year, don't ask for the lowest.
As for the radio it has a Blaupunkt Berlin in it, the original was no longer working when we bought it, it took me 5 years to find one, and the I found the holy grail a NOS Blaupunkt Berlin never installed.
The first time I tested it everything was fine, so I decided to install it in the car, everything was gutted, had to remove the side windows to check the speakers in the back (really good german engineering)
When done took it for a spin nice crackling sound of analog electronics and after 3 months it died, so hence I have a funky dead Berlin in the car that is in the way but looks so cool.

I will stop now otherwise tomorrow I would still be adding trivia and boy there is stuff to tell.

So just a reminder, what for the exhaust ?

Thanks

Jean

Interesting story, and I'll be the first of many to ask for pix

RE: the exhaust, the 924 Turbo exhaust is essentially identical to the early 2.5L exhaust from the cat-back. I believe the CGT had essentially the same exhaust as well. So what this means is that any of the OEM-replacement or aftermarket alternatives for the 2.5L cat-back section should be essentially bolt-in on the CGT.

The down pipe and cat sections (cat = initial muffler in ROW) are somewhat unique to the 931, so if you need new components for those you will need to either fabricate something completely custom or order OEM replacement parts, as I'm not aware of any aftermarket alternatives for those pieces.

PET shows a revision number difference between the 931 & CGT versions of both the "initial muffler" section and the cat-back section. I don't know what the revision might have been...could have been something minor like hanging hardware. Usually (but not always) when the revision number is different but the rest of the part number is the same, the parts will be almost identical with a good chance of being interchangeable.

HTH.

Thanks for the data, for the record a middle section and the end exhaust is something like 1600 EUR (w/o accessories). The GT reference seems to be of unobtainium at Porsche only the std 931 reference still available.
So that is more than enough to make something in SST or find something suitable.

Funny thing everything is still in good shape, alteration is more of a "cosmetic" need.

As for the pix, still not at home, as soon as I'm back will post some.
But it is just a car with a "tuning kit" as my neighbor says. And never looks at it.

Talking about the kitcar, was once used as display for the introduction evening of the first gen bi-turbo, did leave a scar on the left fender, was done by a Chanel purse , at least I'm sure now that wing is original as it is grey as it should be underneath the paint
And yes is left untouched is part of the history, reminds me never to do it again now I'm going to say a stupid thing that I do not practice a lot with it, is meant to be driven and not shown in a "salon".

So some pics

Have been resized to ease the burden on the forum
These are from 2003. But to my knowledge nothing has changed except for a few added km.

Littered all over the car still a few manufacturing stickers

God's eye

One of the many telltales (sticker only on GT)

The bonnet inside is still intact but showing signs of age, but still pretty easy on the eye

Funky Berlin, this is a period correct but non functional, also have a '83 but also non functional

Carrera Sticker on front fender

This is from 2003 as I said, will post later the actual

For the picky, dust is gone

as for the sound "problem".....i made a little cut -in with a grinder, right where the exhaust i going to be horizotal. On idle it is normal, but once you push the accel. you get a sound like a formula car. When you take off a parking lot it leaves stunning,head-turning faces...gives you 200 horses extra. After a while i thought, hmm, i am to old for this...and guess what?

aaaaand pics are back!

Can I ask you something Jean?
How come the central-alarm-lock is placed underneath the actual door handle?
I guess else the rear flairs would be in the way? It would normaly sit another ±15cm towards the rear/right, and not in the door…

Regarding the exhaust issue.....the local Porsche dealer wants $9000 for a new exhaust system for my 928.......that doesn NOT include the headers. But a local exhaust shop has a long time worker that can custom make any exhaust, so for a mere $1800, I'll get this shop to make me a custom exhaust system.

So maybe some custom exhaust work might be the solution to your expensive problem. Porsche really should be more realistic at the way it prices it's parts.

The alarm was I suppose dealer installed, and not factory.

Is a Bosch item, complete with ultrasound sensor above the mirror and a pickup sensor in one of the wells. This sensor even has an air bubble visual to confirm horizontally.
Have to confess never used it, as for the spot have seen other cars with the key under handle, routing thru the panel would have been a pain I suppose, was most certainly done together with the radio.

I will probably dismantle it as I have no use of it and could win some kg in the process.
Will shoot some more over the weekend and post some details that are well nice touches from factory, a testament to the real purpose of the car !!
