Hey guys!

Ok so me and a buddy have begun a little business buying cars and fixing them up and selling them. We are both in high school, i know what your thinking, oh just some dumb kids who think they are mechanics but we are very knowledgeable and ambitious. SO our latest project is a 924 Porsche!

We love the car. It's a 78 non turbo, rough paint and a few rust spots but straight. It says 08003 miles on it and we are going to assume it has 108003 on it. The engine is seized hella. BUT we have a new one that came with the car with only 10K on it. We have some idea for what to do but aren't sure what is popular for Porsche so we'd like to know what your guys opinions are. We are going to repaint it metallic black with white accents; rims, engine dress up, PORSCHE in white on the doors.

So what's new? Popular? Are these good ideas? Any input helps. Thanks guys! Team MED (Mixed Engine Development)

first thing...Metallic paint is harder to paint then non metallic...on top of that black is the hardest colour to paint as it shows up all imperfections... Getting a pro to paint it can cost more then the car itself is worth.

Buy a Haynes manual then tackle the engine swap..normally ive found that people looking to buy a 924 want it clean and working in common porsche colours....theyre generally not after anything overly fancy ...unless you take it to that WHOLE NEW level...ie sparky..applebit..ideola ..morghen ..RC etc.....even then the work put in will be more then your return...

Porsche in whit on the doors is a no no....if you want to do the whole porsche along the side thing get the decals

I agree with scorpio. If you are trying to sell this car, keep it stock. I always find 924s and 944s less attractive when the previous owner has done custom aesthetic work like that. Plus you are never gonna make money back from buying frivolous accessories like rims.

As a learning tool it is fine. You will probably put more money in than it is worth but you may have learned a thing or two.

if your set on changing the color go for a light blue, white or red. these colors have a low relfectivity compared to black. also these colors tend to resell well. do ALL the bodywork yourself as any shopwork will cost booku bucks. single stage paint will not shine up as well but will look good for a couple years. overall keep your costs low and when selling keep pushing the fact that its a porsche! welcome! now where are the pics?

I didn't buy my car as an investment and plan on spending about 15 times what I paid for on fixing it the way I want it. I bought this car because I wanted something that would be fun in the twisties and something that was unique. If you bought a 924 to turn a profit you picked the wrong car.

K so stock all the way. Right now as it sits we picked up the car and engine for $600, not a bad deal in my opinion but I guess we will find out this weekend! It has American Racing rims on it right now.... big five spoke... kinda retarded. They just aren't my favorite brand.

So do we even bother painting it at all? Or would it be better to just sell it onces it's running and let a real enthusiast decide what color it should be??

The tranny is rear mounted!!! That's so cool! I was unaware a car of this age had something like that! The weight distribution will make the car an excellent handler. The front seats are premo! The rear seat is a little torn up on the top but we are looking into leather repair. Dash is... destroyed :( Going to get a cap for it however. And headliner is a little damaged so we are going to try to tackle that as well. Exhaust is new cat back. Newer tires in the rear but don't match the front. The spare rim is original! I really wish we had the original rims all the way around.

Another question is how do I post pics? I'd love to post em!

Well, the body looks straight, which is good. But seems your earlier description was accurate: The paint looks very rough. You have to repaint it, there's no way you can recondition that paint. My suggestion would be to try to find out what colour it was originally and repaint it that colour. It'll almost certainly up the value a bit (unless it was originally some horrid colour, but that's unlikely, all the 924 colours actually look pretty good, I reckon). I see a few rust spots, too. If it's just surface rust where the paint has peeled away, well, that ain't so bad. But if any of the panels are rusted through, you're in for a fair bit of time or money... or both.
Looks complete, though, which is also a good thing. Doesn't look like it's been pulled to pieces, as so many have. But that interior sure does need a serious cleaning!

If you can get it looking really good (basically as-new) for $1500 - $2000, you should be able to make a few bucks. Otherwise, it's a losing proposition... unless, of course, you keep it and drive it. In which case it's a win!

looks not that bad! paint, clean the hell out of the interior, refin the wheels yourself and you have something that will sell. remember to fight the temptation to improve on things that wont help the price. get it looking good and driving SAFE and see what kind of offers you get.

Doesnt looka bad at all. Is there any water leaks?? Inter ior is nice..
see if you guys can pull off a basic back high gloss paint job and clean er up. You might be able to double your payment for it. It runs ok does it??
