how do I remove the stock tri-spoke steering wheel?

get hold of the horn pad and yank it off. It clips on in 3 places.

There is a 22mm nut in the centre then. But mark the wheel and shaft for re-alignment it's tricky toi get right!!

will I risk breaking something if I yank the horn pad out?

yes, welcome to 30 year old cars

It's the only way and they are sometimes very hard to remove. They are normally fine though and can take the rough handling. Mine has been apart loads of times withotu incident. You can normally pop off one at a time, just pull the end of each spoke by hand. I wouldn't try and lever it off.

If you break something the clips on the steering wheel side can be replaced.

Yes, your nose!

Seriously, it requires some force to remove, and you could easily bash your nose in if you're not prepared for the release when it finally lets go...

yeah be careful, first time i did it about 6 years ago i had a screwdriver in my hand and i nearly tore my own eye out!!

its wonderful how hindsight is always perfect 20/20 vision
