|
|
New for 2010, the G31 and G16 1st gear dogteeth and the 2nd/3rd gear dogteeth are now available through Ideola's Garage. The list pricing with California Motorsports is $250 per dogteeth, but you may order them through us for $225 apiece. Note that the 1st gear is different between the G31 and the G16, but the 2nd and 3rd gear dogteeth are the same across both boxes.
G31 First Gear Dogteeth
G16 First Gear Dogteeth
G31/G16 2nd & 3rd Gear Dogteeth
In addition, we have now tracked down sources for complete repair kits for both the G31 and the G16 snailshell transmissions. Note that the seal kits are both NLA from Porsche, so what we've done is identified a parts list and put together a special package price that we believe is cheaper than what you'll be able to buy the individual components for. The kits consist of the following:- first gear synchro ring
- second gear synchro ring
- front housing to mid housing gasket
- input shaft radial seal
- (2) stub axle radial seals
- shift selector radial seal
- differential cover o-ring
- (2) transaxle fill plugs
- (2) rear shifter coupling bushes (plastic)
- ball cup shifter joint
Pricing as follows:
G31/G16 Ultimate Rebuild Kit: $310
Includes everything in the list above
G31/G16 Deluxe Rebuild Kit: $136
Seal kit, 2 fill plugs, and shift linkage bushings. NO synchro rings included.
G31/G16 Basic Rebuild Kit: $72
Seal kit only (no synchro rings, filler plugs, or shift linkage bushings)
Finally, I've also found a source for upgraded brass bushings for the rear coupler on the G31 shift rod. I'm still waiting to confirm pricing, and will post it here as soon as I have it.
Let's get those snailshells back on the road in 2010, boys! _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

v8carrera seems to think so, and that it will fit. I'll find out about availability, might be a better alternative. However, until someone actually installs and confirms compatibility... _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Let's say you've never rebuilt a transmission before. On a scale of 1 to 10 assuming you're rebuilt an engine, and know how to work on cars, how hard is a rebuild? _________________ - 1977 Porsche 924 2.0 N/A (Trackday Project)

The G31 is based on 915 and relative easy to work with. There are several rebuild websites and it is no rocketscience. I intend to do it myself with no experience at all _________________ Carl Fredrik Torkildsen

Will probably take a kit once I stert on my spare box. I have no synchro left on 1 and little on 2 at the moment... _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

hold on a minute....i dont agree...it is not as straigth forward as it sounds.
i've been turned down by experienced mechanics to rebuild a 911 gearbox, they said: we dont know the tolerances and torque specs of the geargox...we ended up with one mechanic who did the rebuild.
a friend of mine rebuilt his corrado gearbox and it blew at 100mph after a few weeks of use.
the 911 gearbox i was talking also blew after a few months of use.
As a conclusion...i'm quite sure there are specs to follow and special tools to have when rebuilding a gearbox. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

I don't think the gearbox is nearly as difficult as fitting the diff, from what I understand. I believe the front section of the G31 can be redone without disturbing the diff... _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I thought they were in the manual - I thought the strip down instructions included them... _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

is there anyone here who has rebuilt one with pics and information regarding a rebuild with some sort of solid info on results? _________________ - 1977 Porsche 924 2.0 N/A (Trackday Project)

I have only taken apart one manual gearbox in my life and it was from a lawn tractor. I did manage to get it back together but would never attempt one by myself.
I would go see some of the local transmission shops and see if you could talk them in to letting you watch the first time around...I am sure they could teach you all kinds of tricks. _________________ 1976 924

I've done a few dozen 356 and 911 boxes. Some special tools are required as well as a press. If you are just replacing the dog teeth and synchro rings, you don't need the differential measuring tool. It's not rocket science but you need to pay strict attention to the spacing of the gear sets and all the springs and balls in the detent assy.
After I get the rebuild kit from Ideola, I'll let you know about the dogleg box.
