|
|
Before i started for my weekend spin in the 924 i checked my tires and i noticed a kind of slack in both front wheels.I could move them about half a inch in -+Y dir. They seem to be pretty "loose"!?
Never had a issue with them in the last 15 years, so, are the wheelbearings shoot or is it possible to re-adjust them?
Thanks in advance,

| depends on the direction of movement. push and pull on the top of the tire and find play it could be wheel bearings, balljoints or strut play either in the shock or strut bushing. Push and pull on the front or the rear of the tire and find play, it could be wheel bearings or tie rod. Either the tie rod balljoint or the tie rod bushing in the rack. Jacking up the vehicle and moving the wheel will give you a better idea of what you are dealing with. I check my wheel bearing tension every two oil changes. If you have never re-tensioned your wheel bearings now would be a good time. |

Joe, clear that you like the blue colour.... i have seen that white one in person this afternoon and it looked really great.....but, the price tag says 145.000.- euros approximately ´200.000 $ US ......but still love the engine sound....even when all the puplic turned the heads as i left with the 924......! _________________ NA 924 - april/1977- 4-speed-audi gearbox.

| Red flag! Thats a massive amount of bearing movement. Well beyond simple bearing ajustment. Are you feeling ball joint/top mount movement too? |

As long as i am driving on a flat paved road it is nearly not to detect, but when you hit some rough spots on the road you will feel some movement in the steering wheel and it gets somehow uncontrolled. _________________ NA 924 - april/1977- 4-speed-audi gearbox.

With the front jacked up under the cross member & both wheels off the ground, move, shake each wheel like JC said. Helps to have another person rock the wheel while you examine possible causes.
Does each wheel have its own movement or do they both move together more or less? Individually could be wheel bearings, balljoint, tie rod end, upper strut mount or possibly A arm bushes. If they both move by rocking one wheel look at the steering rack & mounts, or more likely the intermediate shaft with the 2 universal joints. |

Yeah, it makes me feel unsafe....
about 5 years ago i played with that screw on the steering mechanism
that controls the "stiffness" (not the stiffmaster , Freaks!!) off the steering mech.I adusted it to a point where it has nearly no force to bring the steering back to driving forward.....
I will see what is going on in while
