hey guys my name is mike. im new to this website, but i have been reading it for a while now and i like it.
to the point
im restoring a 1980 Porsche 924 manual US version and i was wondering if there are head from other cars like a VW or BMW or anything else that i can toss in there and get some more power. also i would love to do the EFI and get rid of the complicated intake and fuel system. basically im looking for any directions or tips on gaining power without swapping the engine.

any help is appreciated
thank you

The biggest question in performance is.... what's your budget?

Well that answers his cylinder head choices thing sort of. He could swap to a 931 head yes? I've heard of that being done. Or having head work done. There is megasquirt. Different throttlebodies.... etc.

My bad...was on a cell phone earlier.

NO, there is no other head to bolt on. And I wouldn't bother with the 931 head swap because it requires unquantified modifications to the piston setup. It was done in the past on the D-Prods, but there are no details anywhere that I've found that provide clear answers on how to make that arrangement work. Our research indicates that the 931 head doesn't really flow that much better than the NA head.

You're much better off going with high compression pistons and a big valve head. So you can look for Euro-spec pistons second hand, or you can order Euro-spec (or higher) CR pistons (e.g. from Diamond; see 2.0L engine mods here).

EFI is currently DIY territory, but we're working on that too, and hope to have a complete kit later this year with Fuel Rail, Trigger Wheel, and bracket package. We don't have concrete plans yet for the EMS piece, so you can either do MegaSquirt or select any of several available off-the-shelf solutions, such 034Motorsports, DTAFast, MoTeC, etc., all depending on your budget of course.

Best help I can give you is the Performance Upgrades Project Planning Thread. It's a fair amount of content to digest, but you will be further ahead if you read it and adopt a similar approach to planning out a complete build, instead of just charging ahead willy-nilly.

yeah i read the engine modification tread by ideola. it has good pointers.
the budget is not an issue, because i have the time to save whatever cash i need. i mean im not loaded, but i do all the work myself so i save on labor big time. i dont mind working on the stock head, but that depends on how much i can squeeze out of it. my machine guy does pretty good job and hes not very expensive.

i keep hearing about Megasquirt this, Megasquirt that. what is megasquirt?
and i would really like to upgrade the ignition system as well. my old dizzy looks like hell and the guy i got the car from had some wicked redneck wiring done to the engine bay. i mean the coil itself had like 10 wires in and out of it. is there any place where i can buy a new dizzy?

and how about that throttle body. 924OZY said something about a ford mustang throttle on there has anyone heard of that before?

MegaSquirt = an open source engine management system. It can provide both electronic fuel injection AND distributorless ignition, as do most off-the-shelf EMSs. Here's a good place to start learning: http://www.efi101.com/
And of course, there's also the online manual for MS: http://www.megamanual.com/index.html

As for TB, the Ford TB will not be bolt on. The best bolt-on TB upgrade is one from an Audi 5000, which you should be able to source relatively inexpensively from a salvage yard.

i will get right on that. i just checked out some of the 2.0 engine mods on ur website. very impressive, im zeroed in on the exhaust sytem and i can see getting that maybe in a month or two. ( i have to fix my mustangs tranny first) and then i think i will go for the big valve kit. on an average what kind of power gains should i expect from the EMW kit?
