i am 16 and bought a 1982 924 (manual transmission) for my first car. just this week my dad and i were changing the clutch in the car. Once we got the clutch housing out my had noticed a grove going all the way around the shaft on the end that would be going in to the clutch unit. This grove is in the flat part at the end and it is half way ( their is a flat section on each side). This grove goes all the way around and my my dad has never seen anything like it. i was wondering it this was normal or if i need to buy another shaft for my car?

Best bet is to post an ad in the parts wanted section for a used torque tube. Make sure you state the year of your car.

I've got an '82 931 (turbo) torque tube. Is your car a turbo model or normally aspirated? There is a difference in the shaft size between the two.
Edit: or is there with the Audi transmission?????

Yep, the configuration on the torque tubes is different for the Audi gearboxes between the 931 and 924. The shaft diameter is 25mm vs 19mm respectively, and the input shaft on the 931 version of the box is longer, meaning that the driveshaft in the torque tube is actually a bit shorter on the 931 version.

eli32112, what year is your car, is it a Turbo or normally aspirated, and where in IL are you? Chances are we can find somebody that is parting out a car that can help you out with a used torque tube.

I suggest buying the pilot bearing assembly - housing, needle bearing and seal as a complete unit. Expensive, and you'll wait forever to get the stupid thing, but it's better than trying to find the seal separately. Also, do a search for 'pilot bearing' on this site and read up on removing the old one. It's a PITA.

Some reading: http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=29562&highlight=

Check out the pics of the tool I used to get the pilot bearing out.

Good luck!

He has a 82 924 and I doubt the pilot bearing is there anymore.
