How many miles on your motor? Did you buy it non-running, or did this problem just develop? How do the plastic plugs for the speed/reference sensors look?
DME relay is pretty generic, you should be able to get one for $30 or so. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I have piles of relays and sensors at my house to check the car with. I live close to you. Have you ever had the car running at all?

sounds like a relay issue, i had the same issue about 3 months ago and it turned out that some one had connected an extra wire to the live connection on the fuel pump inadvertently drawing current from it, this caused the pump to not work so well when the relay was in but fine when i jumped it. Get under the passenger side behind the rear wheel you will see the pump. take the connectors off, one per connection, and clean with a wire brush, you may just have an intermittent connection. Its a quick check and could solve a lot of issues.

just a crazy thought, unplug the electrical connector to your number one injector and see if the car will stay running at a rough idle.

Have you pulled the cap to check it and the rotor? My previous S did a slow death on starting, took forever, and turned out to be said parts. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Have a look at Clarks it explain how to do a quick multi meter check of the ref. sensors.
They're not cheap and hard to come by 2nd hand but if you find that the BG one is duff then that will be your problem, its the BG thats the one that sends the signal to the ECU.
If the DG one is good they so long as you can get them out you can swap them over.
Failing that as its been said try and get hold of a spare DME and try that.

I had a very similar problem with my "83 944 last fall. I tried everything, but the reference sensor. Once I changed it out...she started right up and has ever since. Do your research...if you buy the BMW sensor it will save you a lot of dough
BMW part number is 12-14-1-708-619
German Auto parts has them for 66.07 + s/h (look it up under BMW 633i)
or you could go to Pelican parts and get the Porsche one (no difference) for 168.25...it is your call _________________ Matt
