Rasta, how did you prep the stuff before plating? Did you blast it yourself, or did you have that done as part of the service? My local plater doesn't like cleaning the stuff, but he gives me a great price if I bring the stuff in already blasted. It's a Royal PITA to do, but worth it. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Their minimum order was $45, and he told me to "fill a bucket" in addition to the spring plates so I could get maximum value out of the $45. Chemically stripping the parts was another $15. _________________ Toofah King Bad

The zinked stuff looks great! We have a similar service here. It is called 'yellow passivated'.
I was wondering how to preserve it: new parts lose their shine in a couple of years. Very thin (wipe) coat of oil or something?
I also thought of having all the CIS banjo bolts replated, but am still unsure if this will affect the fit or throughflow of these parts... _________________ 1983 NA Alpineweiss since 2001

You can get zinc in yellow, silver. I think there is a third colour option too.
Cadmium is more corrosion resistant in salt atmospheres than zinc but it also looks like yellow zinc. But the real key is that cadmium is not selected for corrosion resistance so much as lubricity. i.e. it slides well. Ideal for mating parts that need to move over each other easily like spring plates on suspension components. You wouldn't want to use Cad on pulleys where you need surface grip though. _________________ 924 (84) N/A 2 ltr - 5 Speed - BLACK - Project (looking for 200BHP, any ideas!)

Mez jealous lol. 9XXBIRD, any idea whether such a fantastic service is available here (at comparible rates)? Me thinks not..."a nation of pen pushin' pussies with scant regard for the diminishing engineering legacy of the Nation...blardy blah?"Good stuff Rasta, now get it built before you morph into a zinc plated procrastinator |
