Hello,
I have just tried to do the timing on my 79 924na and have found that when the timing light flashes the timing marks are about 180 degrees out.

Also when the cam marks line up, the timing marks are also 180 out on the crank.

It as all done dodgily by the previous owner, but How do I fix this?

It still runs, drives, and can spin em off the line, but I cant do the timing till I sort it out.

The How-To forum is where guys can post their how-to instructions (either completed or work-in-progress) and receive feedback.

This is not the place to post requests for instructions on how to do something. If you want instructions post your question in the General forum or better yet, work out how to do it yourself and make your own How-To as you go along.

Welcome to the forum.

One of the Moderators will probably put this in the right place…
btw. your previous thread http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=31394 should go into ‘Performance updates’. You'll get the hang of it
Good luck.

Kind regards, Harm.

I would wonder if the plug wires are properly connected?? Perhaps the best thing to do is start from scratch, reset everything.

Turn the engine till the crank pulley mark lines up, then do the final set of the crank by lining up the marks on the flywheel (visible through the window in the bellhousing, at the back of the block under the ignition coil).

Then either verify that the cam's timing marks line up, or move the cam till they do (obviously after slipping the belt off). If you do have to move the cam, be sure the timing is correct AFTER setting the tension.

Most likely those are correct, though.

Once the cam and crank are set properly, remove the distributor cap. The ignition rotor should be pointed at the rear-most bolt on the intake manifold. I'm guessing it probably isn't. If it isn't, you'll need to remove the distributor entirely (after removing the hold-down clamp) and reinserting it so that it does point there. Keep an eye out for a small paper gasket that goes under the distributor - easy to tear or lose, will make a small annoying oil leak down the backside of the block if it's gone.

You will then need to put the ignition wires in the correct location. Obviously, the terminal above the rotor, when properly installed, should be #1. IIRC, they proceed counterclockwise from there around the cap, 1-3-4-2 (Zundfolge!!!) as marked on the valve cover. Unless someone cares to correct me here - this is from memory.

Then you need to get the car started; since you've removed the dizzy and reinstalled differently, you'll need to reset the timing. You may even need to try with the distributor body at different angles till she starts. Obviously, once she's started, you can set the timing with the light.

Thanks for that.
It turned out that the PO has installed the flywheel incorrectly.

So I checked for TDC with a pencil in the plug hole,
Marked it on the Crank Pulley, (there were 3 little dots there I think)
(this varified cam timing was correct, as mark on cam pulley lined up to pointer)
Then did the timing using the mark on the front pulley.

This is what I am used to,
And it makes sense,
because the Crank pulley cant be fitted the wrong way!
