|
|
Happy new year everyone!
As the subject says, what is the correct (safest) orientation of the cotter pin on the rear axle castle nut?
For the longest time i positioned the cotter pin so i could bend both arms of the pin around the circumference of the castle nut (one arm going clockwise, and the othe counterclockwise)).
But this past couple a yrs i`ve been orienting the cotter pin such that i can bend both arms perpendicular to the circumference of the castle nut (one arm going towards me and the other away from me).
What do you guys (or gals) think? THANKS!

It does not matter once the pin is in so the nut cannot loosen and the pin can't come out. |

I'm a wrap-around guy. If there's going to be a wheel fit problem, this will help negate it, although I don't think it makes much difference really. Ever try to take a nut off when there's still a piece of cotter pin stuck in the bolt? Sheesh! _________________ '84 944 - kid blew motor

Ok thanks guys! looks to me like its individual preference. I really havent had any problems orienting the cotterpin either way, its just my sometimes obsessive-compulsive tendencies that make me want to know the better way to do it.
Regardless, anyone know what the porsche factory recommends? _________________ 1979 924 U.S. version

^+1 I split them and then wrap the ends around the nut in opposite directions. I should have been more specific. _________________ '84 944 - kid blew motor

Just saw an aviation tech website that said that the "wraparound" method (pins bent to the left and right of the castle nut) was optional, and that the preffered method was bending one prong towards the axle bolt end (towards you when your looking at one side of the car), and the other prong away from you (both prongs then parallel to the rear axel of the car).
I`ve been using the "wraparound" method for yrs with absolutely no problem, but decided to shift to the other method, just because its supposedly better(?) But why would it be better?? _________________ 1979 924 U.S. version
