I need to get new tires for the 941, so now is the time to settle on a set of wheels. Here are my options:- Cookie Cutters 7Jx15: refinish my spare set (free)
- Rials 7J & 9Jx16: repaint centers flat black (free)
- Fuchs 7J & 8Jx16: $600-$2000 depending on condition
- Cups 7.5J & 9Jx17: flat black, $1200 (includes tires!)
You all know what Cookies and Fuchs look like.
Here are the Rials:
Here are the Cups:
I have to get tires either way. The Cookies and Rials are both free, as I already own them. Unfortunately, though, I don't have the center caps for the Rials, and they're unobtanium. I'd have to rig something up, and then I'm worried it would either look bad or wouldn't stay on correctly.
Regarding Fuchs, they're plentiful, but I think somewhat overpriced for what they are. I can get a set of brand new replicas for like $850, or I can buy somebody elses trashed project Fuchs for ~$600, or I can fork over big $$$ for the real deal in good shape.
Then there's the Cup wheels. What do you guys think about those on the 944 body style? I like the flat black idea. Here's a real quick-n-dirty attempt to mock them up on the 941:
Or is there another rim I should consider??? _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I think I like the Rials best out of that list. I think my actual choice on rims would be black twists 18" x 10.5 rear and 8 front. There's a red/black 944 with LS1 on youtube that's pretty dang sweet looking.
This one shows the wheels better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbQ9VVBC6ig&feature=channel

@bnoon
Can't fit the twists...I have early offset and that car in the video is late. 9" is about as wide as I can go on the early offset configuration.
@Harm
Thanks for the suggestion, but there's a reason phoneys weren't on the list They are my least favorite OEM wheel. Granted, the deep dish are a bit better, but I just don't care for them at all. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Strong and light. Fuchs fits the bill but make sure you get 951 rims if using modern Brembo's. Although 911 9" rears are a direct fit. Caliper clearance is the key, spacers to simply to make a wheel work (just for asthestics) isn't clever IMO. You've probably hit upon this snag hence the Q... just like Raceboy with his BBS RS rims....and hammer BLESS.
Keep it real with tyre size also, 205 for 7" fronts , not 225, 225 for 8" 245 for 9".
Just look at the next scooby or evo in front of you...there's no Burt Reynolds wigs involved, and yes it will out corner you...if you even have corners in your neck of the woods, which I doubt.
And for the sake of international harmony, pls dont polish or chrome...it is'nt cool!
For an early offset, the only OE choice without silly spacers is 15" phoneials (ET 23), cookie cutters, Fuchs 911 rims (stock calipers), 951 Fuchs or 16" phondials. As far as I'm aware BBS might of provided motorsport items as "stock" but not as an official customer option. |

…next to your cup version it makes a major difference.

The reason I fell in love with 924/944 cars was seeing this picture. I don't know whose pic this is, but this is one of the most beautiful setups I've ever seen. I'd go with the Cups.

@MG
Thanks for sharing that photo!!! Gives a real nice view of the Cups on a 944, and my car will look a lot like that with the rear valance too.
What do you think about the flat black version vs. the factory paint? _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Well here's my 2 cents
I really like the look of the rials and the ats spiders (15" on my car) but they are a pain to clean. the rials really look great with the deeper rim.
Black cup's (or twists if you could) would be second choice, wont show brake dust and easy to clean. but i would rather have 16" wheels, the 17's look to big, not enough sidewall.
I dont like the phone dials or trashcans and fuchs are overdone.
Those Rials are sweet, use 'em! _________________ "Government exists to protect us from each other. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves. "

@Rocco
You definitely hit on a few key points...
Fuchs = overdone
deep dish = goodness
17" = maybe too big
If I use the Rials, the centers will be painted satin SEM trim black to match the rest of the trim on the car, so they won't show the dirt nearly as bad. They're period correct too.
The only thing holding me back is that I don't have the center caps. I measured the opening, and it came out to 2.4", so I'm not sure if I can use standard off-the-shelf 2.5" center caps or not. I did some hunting around, and there are some basic plain brushed alu center caps in 2.5" diameter that I could probably adapt, just not sure if they'll stay in place. Any suggestions on what to do about centers for the Rials? If I could figure that out, it might settle the issue... _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Aesthetically, the Rials no doubt. Those 9's look badass.
Dynamically, I'd be a little worried about the stagger between a 7" front and a 9" rear. It might be difficult to dial out the understeer. _________________ Dan.

Hadn't thought about that...although I have no intention of putting this car on the track...this is strictly for daily driver / street duty during the summer...
