This might be the wrong area to post, but just wanted to let the group know I was still going here in Idaho. I had found a couple missing teeth off my cams and parked the 924s3 till I could find new cams. I finally worked a deal with Motorsports down in Salt Lake and traded several of my spares for a nicely rebuilt 968 head and cams. So it quickly went from a cam swap to a full rebuild.
I took the block completely down and cleaned every little channel of the 120K miles of sludge it had built up. I also found all 9 of the missing cam teeth sitting in the bottom of the oil pan. These oil return passages are huge! I think this motor could pass an M10 bolt!
Beyond the chipped teeth and general grime, it was in great shape. The pistons/rods showed no wear, the bearings were just starting to wear. No problems with #2 and 3 con rod, but #2 did show the most wear even though my plasti guage showed it just out of new tolerance (low 90s). The cylinder walls and mains were also just shy of perfect. Porsche really does build a quality car. But I'm preaching to the choir.
So anyhow, I've spent the last 2 months cleaning, beadblasting and painting parts while waiting for new stuff to come in.
I port matched the throttle body to the intake and the intake to the head. Then I had the local propeller shop SS peen the manifold. An old-school hotrod buddy of mine told me that was the old way to finish cast aluminum. I guess peening the cast aluminum closes the "pores" enough that the aluminum doesn't oxidize as much. It looks great, but only time and use will tell me how it works.
Rewelded #2 exhaust header which cracked due to PO not re-installing the hanger in front of the cat. It overstressed #2 and I had a nice full circumference crack in the header. Porsche put that hanger there for a reason! So I got that welded up and smoothed those ports out a little. Now I need to find a hanger. I'm trying the VHT ceramic header paint. Wife didn't like that 3 step baking process!?! It seemed a bit soft. Not holding my breath.
So I just got a teflon lined IJohnson crank scraper today and will be fitting it tomorrow. It is very tight and no trimming instructions came with it so I would be glad to hear any tips on fitting that.
Anyhow, I will post some pics soon and can't wait to back on the road! _________________ '88 924S 3L 6sp RedRat

Welcome back! That car screams and out pulled my 2.7 Boxster on Forest Service roads between Boise and Portland. Even Khal was impressed. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Yes it is a fun sleeper.
Thanks Paul, that was a fun drive...while it lasted. Fraggle just finished a total rebuild on that 928s4 that cut our drive short. It is doing a lot better now.
I should note that I called IJohnson to get the instructions for the scraper. I didn't buy directly from them so I shouldn't imply that they don't include instructions. They e-mailed me instructions w/in 2 minutes of me calling them. Very helpful people.
I doubt this rebuild will make my car much faster. I still had great compression before I tore it down. The port matching and crank scraper should add a few ponies, but I'm embarrassed to say I don't even know what cam grind I got. I was just trusting the shop when I traded for it. It is just a "street grind". I told him I wanted something a little more lively that wouldn't compromise the rest of the components. He did some mild porting on the head too.
I keep telling myself not to expect too much hp, I don't want to get my hopes up too high and jinx myself on my first re-build. I'll be happy to have gained 10-15 over stock. Like you mentioned, this thing was plenty fun as it was. _________________ '88 924S 3L 6sp RedRat
