|
|
I've found a machinist who regrinds Porsche 356 and air cooled VW lifters. He puts a .001 in. taper on them for reuse in engine rebuilds with new cams. Does anyone have an idea as to whether 924 lifters can be reused if this is done to them?

There was some considerable discussion on this topic a ways back. Something about grinding off the "hardened" layer on the surface of the lifter. Not sure whether we ever came to a fact-based definitive conclusion but IIRC, it was "buy new lifters"...
That being said, I've reused lifters without having problems as long as they don't have any discernable wear, gouging or pitting on the flat surface. Others will have opinions on this but that's my personal experience... |

My two cents on this: I went new because I had just dropped a ton of coin on a cam, and the warranty required new lifters. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I have just done a season and a half of racing on a cam that had reground lifters. No visable wear and no need to adjust clearences.

what are the requirements for the cores, and how much do they charge? to they do anything to harden or treat the bearing surfaces? _________________ proud owner of a 1979 924 Sebring Edition with a 931 trans that looks horrible but somehow runs... |

I have had two sets done, I beleive they only grind them no hardening. Regarding cost I have no idea as it was part of a bigger job on both occasions but most places charge in the order of $10 ~ $15 per lifter _________________ Over the top of skyline, total brake failure.... hit the wall at over 200 kp/h at the dipper, so anyone who has to brake for the esses is a pussy.

I seem to recall a suggestion that they should be hard chromed after grinding.
Let me see if we can get our resident machining expert to weigh in... _________________ Vaughan Scott
