Well we have all heard of kids running away to join the circus or the French Foreign Legion as a throw away line.

Well my son has done just that , but he didnt run away and he has joined the REAL French Foreign Legion. Did a stint in the Australian Army but is looking for something different.

He phoned us just before he went through the door and now he has a new name and we wont hear from him again until he gets to a certain stage in his training.

I will have to keep sending him money and maybe he can find some cheap parts to send back to Australia

The French Foreign Legion was formed so that France could send solders to dangerous places without risks to French citizens.

French citizens are prohibited from joining.

They are undoubtedly a bunch of very tough guys. Traditionally they will accept anyone no matter their past history or record. That's One of the reasons why they give you a new name and a french passport in that name.

You have a new country but your not a french national.
