Well, Scorpio posted and wanted to know what people were doing, and wanting some pics.. So it makes a good segway for some of my questions.. Of course I feel these questions and pics are far from "exciting", but oh well.. :P
First off, my car was running nasty today, can't get high RPMs, or go up hills, it would sputter as if running on 3 cyls.. It got worse if I turned on headlights (clue #1!). Volt meter was at 14v+ though.
I knew it needed the basic tune up stuff (plugs, cap, rotor, wires), because I pulled a plug:
yup, its burning a bit of oil too.
Check the wires:
(sorry for the blur, but you see the green corrosion, and get the idea)
So after reading http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=20254&highlight=splitfire I setout to buy some NGK or Denso plugs. Car was running so bad while around 50 miles from home, I was sort of desperate. That place (Autozone) didnt have either plug. My choice was autolite or champion. So I got the Champion "Copper Plus" RN9YC and gapped to 060. They also didnt have cap, rotor, or wires, or tools I could borrow.. So got the car home, and went to the local AdvancedAuto. They had cap/rotor (GP Sorensen; I probably should have passed and waited till tomorrow when Napa was open, but oh well).
They didnt have the wires either.. BUT, there was an issue with ordering the wires.. Need to find out if I needed resistor boot type or not (?). From looking at my car, and pictures of plugs, he's wondering if my engine is really a 1977. Because the setup, and existing wires look like they are from the turbo model (and I dont have turbo, that much I know). He also said my coil looked like it was higher performance, so wondering if someone did an engine swap(???). But the other thing I noticed was his silly computer did not show a 1976 924, so I'm wondering if he's just showing the 77.5 and up version of the 924.
I'm unable to locate the engine ID on my engine, not quite sure where it is, but didnt see it on the block. Heres a generic shot of the engine compartment, in the dark, and the coil/dist cap.:
So... what I'd like to know is exactly what flavor wires to get for a daily driver car. Additionally, the cap I got was just a "normal" plastic cap, as opposed to the one that is on it now with the grounded metal shielding around it. Or does that shielding come off, and go on the new cap?
And.. for some added "excitement", while I was looking for engine ID, I cam accross this bolt sitting on the steering boot:
But could not see where it came from. Looks a little too big to safely just ignore.
BTW.. its a 1977 924 NA M&R Edition. VIN 9247209956
P.S. (edit) Excuse the signs of wiring jobs, I'm still going over the odd wiring that the PO did, and fixing what I can |

^+1 Exhaust bolts? Not, probably. Studs and nuts and washers - oh my! Shouldered bolt (as in pic) is probably from alt (or such) bracket. _________________ '88 944 Auto - may or may not resurrect |

If you really want to know what the bolt came from, you could get the length, diameter and thread pitch and check it against

The bolt was sitting on the left hand side.. or right hand side if you are facing the car from the front.. or Driver's side if you keep in mind its a US car... So that kind of rules out the alt. (although, my volt meter in the car is reading 16v.. seems kind of high, possibly unrelated though).
It does have the A/C unit there, but not connected. Seems to be pretty solid. Above the A/C unit is a space where obviously something was once there, but not anymore(!?). Pure guess is air pump maybe?
The intake and exhaust seem to use studs and nuts. Guess I'll give the 'ol Engine hardware guide a try when I get home...
On another note, pertaining to my plugs and wires bit, I finally found someone selling a new set of Bosch wires, and did that basic tune-up, but still having what seems to be a fuel problem. Car will idle fine, and if I slowly give it the gas, it revs up. If its under any sort of load, or I just hit the gas, it cuts out as if misfiring (or not getting enough fuel). I can indeed hear the fuel pump loud and clear though (is that bad?). This started rather suddenly a few weeks ago, and having trouble correlating it to anything I did on the car. But I'm reading through the suggestions on the CIS tester from the other new-guy thread... As a cheap-n-easy try, I could replace the fuel filter. Probably needs one anyway, as the one there looks pretty old.

Looking at Ideola's handy-dandy spreadsheet, I do not find the bolt.
However, looking in the PET directly, I see a few of them, mostly in the A/C area. To the best of my abilities at the moment, it seems that it has a length of 30mm, thread of 1.5 and shaft size of 10. I'm guessing this would be called an "M10x30".
So if it is indeed A/C, I doubt it has anything to do with my fuel problem.. feeling around the A/C compressor, I dont sense any missing bolts, but will keep checking this weekend if there isnt so much snow. |
