This new invention could have some really interesting automotive applications:

The Dyson Air Multiplier™ fan works very differently to conventional fans. It uses Air Multiplier™ technology to draw in air and amplify it 15 times, producing an uninterrupted stream of smooth air. With no blades or grill, it’s safe, easy to clean and doesn’t cause unpleasant buffeting.

no, flying would be impossible as you rely on the airstream for your control, yes i know the harrier jump jet uses vector thrust to achieve VSTOL but it uses a constantly adjusting jet to achieve this.

it would be cool to have something revolutionise aviation again as Concorde did, I was lucky enough to see it daily and mananged to get onto it a few times in the hanger. Its sad to see that performance and an engineering achievement of the century take a step back and be decomissioned because of Pricks like Al Gore and his scare tactics on global warming, yes as a commercial pilot i do add to the number of hydrocarbons in the upper atmosphere but .. and this is the big butt, the planet goes thru large scale cooling and heating periods all thru history, and unless the mammoths had huge industrial plants like the Chinese that caused this, it would lead me and many other people of a geological, physical, chemical, scientific, palentoglogical backgrounds who completed the studies and articles for Scientific American, Focus, New World and other respectible mags to agree.... we are not helping the situation, not at all, but this has not come around because we drive porsches, but because Mother nature has decided that its time.

or Tom Cruise and his magic cult have decided.. Ill leave it up to you.

one final note, in an age where we are being treated like LEPERS because we choose to drive a classic car bacuse of its CO2 FOOTPRINT, note this...

ONE toyota prius, ONE. has more of an ecological impact, more of a Co2 imprint JUST BEING MADE than 2 porsche 924's 2.0 na will have in a 30 year span if each covers 130,000 miles on unleaded petrol.

for those of you who think i am spouting off, please please take the time to reasearch the PRIUS articles by GREENPEACE who tried to have it banned for its damage it is causing.

http://www.greenhybrid.com/discuss/f33/toyota-prius-bad-environment-12657/

and for those of you who are wondering WHY toyota would make this?

they get a 5% discount off the TOTAL tax bill of their company for every year they produce an hybrid energy car.

5% is #### when you are the worlds largest car manufactuor!

no i mean could it lift some weight since it says it accelerates gases 15 times...with a constant flux? maybe one could forcefeed one stream into another and obtain a cascade effect.....maby we'll all just float around in a couple of months.

I wish the info indicated what percentage of the airflow was increased due to entrainment vs. inducement. If the multiplicative factor is primarily from entrainment, it would be less useful as a retrofit for conventional fans in an automotive application (think climate control or heat exchanger cooling).

Their digital motor looks promising too...

why would it save on fuel bills? You don't use less fuel when you don't burn less air.

i meant if we were all floating about rather than relying on rubber contact with the ground.. and by that logic less contact equals less drag, less drag means less power required to cover the same application so less fuel required.

and i know its PURELY hypothetical so im not starting an arguament thread here based on what if's

Oh in that case I misunderstood you

But you're totally right... that's why hovercrafts are such wonderful things.

Anyone interested in buying one? I'm putting one up for sale (well...the hull..)

5HP engine can lift 400kg without a problem. Only resistance you'll have is air resistance.

edit: and by resistance I mean drag

Unfortunately, the downside of the Dyson method is that you can't make Darth Vader voices through the backside of the fan...

Pffft. Don't want one then

I'd be willing to guess it's HVVVLP (high volume, very very low pressure).
