OK steering wheel can move in and out along axis of steering column...about 5 mm play.
For those in the know... It seems there is about 4 mm give between "that pvc tube" and the circlip...and another couple of mm between circlip and where it stops..
Is this just a steering shaft bearing problem or will sliding the "plastic tube" down a few mm stop this? an extra circlip could act as a washer/spacer
not mine but a pic for reference

Somethings not right. There shouldn't be that much play.
FYI, I'm pretty sure the plastic thingy in that picture you linked to is on backwards. The side with the gaps should be facing toward the front of the car.
Is your entire steering linkage hooked up, as in the primary shaft (in the cockpit), the intermediate shaft (in the engine bay, the piece with two knuckles on it), and the steering rack itself?
Uh. huh huh. huhuhuhuh! I managed to say shaft, cock and rack all in one post _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

hahaha...freudian slip Dan
only primary shaft is hooked up at the moment...but there was play when everything was joined up
Ok maybe about 3mm all up..but enough to make a clunk sound
Mine
Notice in the last two pics how far into then gine bay (3 or so mm) the shaft protrudes when being pressed...

I think you may be OK then. You need to get it all connected, and I bet the play goes away once you have the intermediate shaft attached at both ends, and the steering rack torqued down. There really shouldn't be any way for the primary shaft to move once everything is hooked up, unless your intermediate shaft has slop in the knuckles. If that turns out to be the case, I have a couple of extras that are in good shape. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Yep LHD and RHD are different lengths, LHD N/A and Turbo are the same length and then the right hand drive turbo (and GT) have yet again different length shaft, as RHD turbo and GT cross member is different from the RHD N/A cross member _________________ Remember a Porsche is not just for Christmas,

Oh. I always forget about that. Let's see what PET says about part numbers...
LHD: 477 419 951 F
RHD: 478 419 951 C
D'oh. Sorry Scorp, guess I can't help you out after all _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

PROBLEM SOLVED
New steering shaft bearing (steering wheel side).....regreased old firewall bearing... Reused black plastic sleeve, with a drop of glue to stop it sliding(not that it does with new bearing)...and NO PLAY AT ALL _________________ 1979 NA
