|
|
My wipers work in all posiitons and all functions work except they won't turn off, they stay in the slowest position which is the very bottom even when its supposed to be off which is one up from the bottom. I took the wiper relay out and now they stop but only work in the two fastest positons and the park feature doesn't work. Do you think I need a new relay or do i have to pull my wheel and clean the grounds on the turn signal stalk?
Thanks _________________ 87 924's |

My first guess would be that the wiper switch is bad. I would bother screwing with trying to clean it. The wiper switch is a VW part and fairly inexpensive as long as it's black in color. Brown ones are hard to come by.
Since the relay is easier to get to, I would try substituting it first. Try to find another Boardmember in the Bay Area that you can meet up with who will let you borrow his/her relay for a few minutes to see if yours is defective. |

That would be used stuff right? I would really rather just get new and be done with it but I will give them a call to see what they have and how much. Anyone know a good cheap online place for parts?

Pelican Parts is about as cheap as any, and their price is about $50. You'll pay a bit over $100 for the turn signal/wiper combo.
You might find prices vary as much as $5 less and $100 more. _________________ Mark

| i have the same issue, i cleaned the grounds and that did not help much, i have considered putting a power switch on the dash some where which would cost around 1$ at radio shack and accompanied wires. so i could kill the power to the whole system and forget about the wiper switch, some times if its a nice day ill pull the plug from the wiper motor all together. |

| i found on another blog that the wipers are grounded through the screws that hold the cover panel in place, i have not tried cleaning them yet but i would try starting there. |

They are grounded through those screws; and they can end up with di-electrical corosion that impedes the ciruit. Mine were fixed by simply removeing the screws and re-installing them.
Remember, however, that one of the first projects you need to employ when you have electrical gremlins is to hunt down and clean/tighten the system's grounding points.
Your car is over 20 years old, and most of them probably are still the factory connections. They all need to be cleaned and re-connected. Some of them are a serious pain to reach, so I haven't gone there, yet.
Search these boards for grounding points or some such. Also check on Clarks-Garage.org for info.
