I didn't have the $$$ for the full cage yet, but the rest is about done...

Looking to have some fun at a 2-day HPDE this weekend at Summit Point, Shenandoah Circuit.

Hells, yeah, man, wish I was in the Winchester area!

We all really do need to meet up for a track day someday.

Nice car you got there. I'm curious whether you know how much your car weighs now? I've been meaning to weigh mine, but I never get around to it...

After this weekend, I am going to take it to the truck scale at the landfill and see what it weighs (minus my fat arse!).

I'll post it as soon as I find out.

Sounds good... I've always been curious how light the 924S can be made. I have mine setup for both street and track use, so I'll have add a few lbs to your weight, but it should be close...

Thanks

Just finished our 2-day HPDE track weekend at Summit Point...I'm exhausted.

We ran the Shenandoah Circuit which is a very technical circuit with 22 turns over 2 miles, including a steeply banked curve called the Carousel.

The little red 924S ran great...no problems at all. I got put in the intermediate group with some of the better drivers/cars. A couple of highlights:

1. I kept up with Z-06 (C6) to the point where he let me pass. He would blow me away on the short straights, but then I would catch up in the twisties. He was an older driver, but still had a really fast car.

2. I kept up with my friend in his Cayman to the point where he let me pass and then he had to try really hard to keep up with me. He finally admitted that I was faster than him, but he said that he has a $40k car to protect... and doesn't like to push his limits (makes sense to me)...

3. I had to give passes consistently to a couple of nicely prepped Miatas and a MazdaSpeed 3...damn Mazdas!

4. I kept up with a pretty nice 911 and saw him almost do a complete spin on one of the turns - I think he was distracted by me being on his ass through the turns all the time.

5. Rode as a passenger with an older instructor and experienced my first "4-wheels off road excursion" from the track.

6. I stayed on the track the whole weekend...had a couple of close calls, but no agricultural excursions.

Front brake pads took a beating...need to change them soon.

what harness bar is that? it looks as if it bolts to the rear seat mounts, would it fit in a car with interior but no back seat?

thirdgenbird:

the harness bar I bought off ebay mounts to the upper shoulder belt mounting spots behind the front seats. Nice and sturdy piece and you don't have to hack your interior. Just search for Porsche Harness Bar, this bar works for 911's, 944's and 924's, etc.

With all of that said, if you intend to use the harness bar with a harness, get a set of Schroth Rallye harnesses as they are the only DOT legal harnesses available for use with a harness bar.

http://www.schrothracing.com/store/Tuning/rallye/rallye-cross

If you want to use a more conventional harness, you absolutely need to have at least a roll bar with proper FIA spec padding if not a full cage. If you manage to roll the car (don't laugh it happens at all sorts of tracks and events) the normal harness will keep you upright in the seat where the roof could hit you and crush your head (cool, a kids in the hall reference). the Schroth DOT harness can allow you to move out of the way like a normal belt would.

Good luck!

Believe it or not, that is a custom made harness bar. I used 1-1/2" DOM mild steel tubing, and had our machine shop fabricate some custom brackets for me. I designed the brackets - they are made from 1/2" plate steel.

I have not tested the bar, but I believe it would pass PCA, SCCA or NASA requirements for a structural bar (3000# test on each side). I am not in the mood to test the bar, so I will likely anchor the harness belts to the old rear seltbelt mounts holes, instead of directly to the bar.

The bar fits so perfectly into the brackets I didn't bother welding them yet. The slight camber of the plates mounting to the holes has made the bar so tight, you cannot rotate it or move it.

BC,
You should maybe think about looking into the 944 Spec class at NASA and PCA events. We have a new group in the Southeast.
Heads up on the truck scale thing. Those scales are meant for BIG trucks that are loaded. The ones i've seen work in 20 lb increments! It's much better to go to a NASA event and get on their race scales.

The 924S weighs almost exactly the same as an early 944 because they're the same chassis. Rear spoiler, front valence and flares are the difference.

Does your harness bar keep the shoulder harnesses up at shoulder level? The Weltmeister harness bar uses the stock mounts for the rear shoulder seatbelts option. Those are up on the C pillar and are covered by fathead plastic screws.

Do you know how much either one weighs when stripped? I'm just trying to get a general idea... the only place I've found that will let me weigh my car is over an hour away and I don't really want to drive out there just for that.
