Hey Guys,

The car was on its 4th test run today. Suddenly splutter, backfire and dead. I looked around the engine and the points in the distributor had shut and would not open at all with any revolution of the engine. I re-gapped them and it fired up no problem.

The distributor has some movement on it. I have pulled the distributor and it has about 3mm endfloat. What is the correct max endfloat on these?

There is no side to side movement on it just endfloat and slight rotor movement. Vacuum advance seems to be in order.

Also what is the correct gap for the points?

Last problem is while the water temp is at about 1/2-5/8 the oil is EXTREMELY hot. After the car sits for 30mins you can burn yourself on the valve cover.

Another issue is that when the engine is revved to about 3k there is a metallic vibration near the valve cover. The elbow is intact and doing its job. (Could be from distributor gear?!)

Is it possible that everything is linked to 1 problem?

Any advice appreciated!!

Cheers,
SparkY

My metal heat shield that covers the exhaust manifold was loose and rattled like crazy about the same RPM. Might be worth checking, if you still have it on.

^^^^Bump^^^^

Any advice on the above guys? Just to clear things up.. Endfloat = the up and down movement of the shaft in the distributor

2-3mm up and down is not going to hurt anything. It's side to side play that indicates some wear on the shaft bushings.

Do your cooling fans operate at low speed when the engine is shut off? that will make a definite difference on engine temp after shut down.

Ho spark, long time no see......

for me your ignition is set too early, that is causing the heat.It will burn your contacts (pointers) and cause overheating.

So set your pointers to 3mm and then turn your distributor slowly to the left (firewall).Get a gun to set the timing.

Check your spark plugs, cause they are heat related too. If you have the original Bosch W5DC once make sure there middle-contact is not melted yet.....o,7mm is the corrrect gap.

I found that Bosch dizzies work better with dwell adjustment than with gap.
