A while back I bought this car over the internet, and wasn't sure it was going to be around 2 months later to pick up. Well, after a few blind alleys, and other assorted missgivings, the car is here! Drove from our new winter home in Cloudcroft, NM (http://www.cloudcroft.com/index.html) to Prescott, AZ to pick it up. Snore, long drive, ugh.
The cars VIN is 93A0141519. Some thought US, some thought Euro with the 14.. designation. There are a few more clues as well. There is no Lambda box, nor bung in the exhaust pipe indicating no O2 sensor. Euro bumpers of course too. A stock turbo/vacuum boost gauge is in there as well. The pistons are dished asymmetrically, whereas, the two I have in the garage are symmetrical. The numbers on the pistons are 86V53, and C011. The symmetrically dished piston is also 86V53, but the other number is R021.
The engine was rebuilt and then they detonated it! All four pistons have chunks out of them. They bought used ones, cleaned them up, and that's it. Not sure when they did this, but they rebuilt the head, it looks brand new. The turbo is seized, have a spare to replace it. The exhaust manni is cracked, but repaired, I have a non-cracked one to replace it. The CIS distributor and air box are seized, I have a Series II one to replace it. The AAV looks new, and the WUR looks good, have one of those as a spare as well. The only thing I might not be able to use is the crank. They let it get wet. Grrr, have two good ones back in Wisconsin with low mileage. Here are the pics:
No sunroof!
Got parts?
Not too Pasha-nette about the door panels!
Straight valance.
Old piston on left, new ones on right:
Side view:
Symmetrical 931 piston:
Slightly rusty machined block, no pitting:
Bad Crank, pitted:
The beauty in the beast:
And the dirty rear Pasha seat, and rear bumper:
Overall, pretty happy with the 600 bucks plus diesel fuel that I spent. Have to sort out the crank situation, and then I can assemble the engine and car. The mileage is 54000, and the G31 shifts well, standing still!! Not sure what I'll do with it. May put the bumpers and front fenders on spike, and put the GTS kit on this one with a FMIC. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Yeah, I'm piston ignoramous, or something like that. I have a replacement set, and will use them. One has a slight chip on the lip, not sure if that is a problemo. And the project looks fun to me as well, have 6 months OFF till we reopen our restaurant next spring! _________________ '83 944 Track car.

I'm going to rid the car of it's pasha next spring, when we go back to wisconsin. I need a couple of door panels to replace them. And then we're going to put the Martini carpet and seats in the car at that time. Need to dye the rear but the rest is great. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

The car looks like it has lots of potential. I don't believe the vacuum/boost gauge is stock/OEM. It is a great gauge and not made anymore - hard to find. Probably the best one and easiest to read for our cars. _________________ "Never get out of the boat. Absolutely goddamn right. Unless you are goin' all the way."

Thanks Steve, I've been slowly looking at the parts pile to see what's missing and what's not! No frequency valve, but have been noticing that the Euro cars didn't have one. Same for Lambda box, none under the dash, and no place to mount it if it had one. I've noticed in other searches that the Euro parts can be different, waste gate, CIS dizzy, turbo. However, for example, the turbo is so coked up it doesn't spin, I have a used replacement. Similar part number, but not quite the same. The CIS is toast as well, my replacement from a series II car has a similar part number but not quite the same. So, the rebuild is going to involve a bunch of parts that didn't come with the car. No biggy. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Ya cool.
That's a VDO "Cockpit" series Turbo gauge (combo boost-vacuum obviously). Afaik, they were standard in RoW cars. I had to add one to mine. Took out the only reliably functioning car clock I ever had to make room for it.
Yeah I'd expect less than stellar (or at least unpredictable) results using a lambda fuel distributor without freq valve and lambda box. -As it works by the freq valve bleeding off pressure from the lower chambers to affect the A:F mix. If do-able at all, some over-adjustment and obviously port blocking-off would be required.
This olde picture again -

Be careful, the series 1 and series 2 cars exhaust, turbo, waste gate components mate together differently. Older units often use metal sandwiched gaskets, while new units use crush rings. The newer units that use crush rings often have recesses machined into the mating surfaces. It can get a bit complicated mixing and matching. Don't use crush rings and metal sandwiched gaskets on the same joint.
Smoothie, didn't realize the VDO boost gauge might be standard ROW. Since our cars didn't have one, though the ROW did not as well. An odd omission for a particular market. If my first 931 had one, I wouldn't have melted her down on the track, when my waste gate diaphragm let loose.
I have that exact gauge on my car - had to search high and low for it, as I think it is the best calibrated gauge for our cars. We don't need a gauge going to 25 or 30 boost. _________________ "Never get out of the boat. Absolutely goddamn right. Unless you are goin' all the way."

That crank might be ok at a +1 or +2 just make sure you can find the oversized bearings. I may have some around here somewhere......
So you hauled your car trailer the whole way to NM? _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Yup, did the whole beverly hillbilly routine! We drove the RV flat towing the wrangler, and my cousin's kid drove the F350 and trailer hauling our furniture and appliances. He did some construction work around the house, and then I hauled him to phoenix for a flight back, and I proceeded to Prescott, AZ for the car! I'm working on getting a low mileage crank for the std bearings I got from EBS. But if you find the other ones, let me know. thanks. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

not stock, even RoW's didn't have them. took me ages to find a vdo one that matched the rest of my green gauges.
looks like a good project! i had the same interior, a different steering wheel, no a/c, sunroof delete (high-5!). _________________ '86 944 |
