Sorry, but if you have to ask, you can't afford it. And from the sounds of it, even if you had the money to buy a 911, you probably don't want that one.
Really.
A correct engine rebuild for the 2.7 runs about $15K-$20K, depending on how bad the magnesium crankcase is, and whether it can even be reused.
Sounds like all the body seals are probably rotten, figure $1000 to replace.
Fiberglass in the battery, and "pretty much rust free"?

That's not an S. No red fan shroud and 6200 redline on tach. Early 2.7s were prone to broken cylinder studs. Expensive. Engine looks beat - bet on 162K miles. Owner admits to many faults. Max bid $2500.

These cars are expensive to maintain. Just keeping them running is a pain. As Gohim said if you have the time and money go ahead.
Why not try to get a mechanic in that area to look over the car. Send money to the mech so that he doesn't think you are going to stiff him. It is worth the investment.
As for the car it seems nice, and you will never get a 911 for less. Make sure the guy you send knows Porsches. Try Porsche Panorama for guys in the area the car is in. Can't send a guy to look at it don't buy it. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

The photos and description does make the $7000 starting bid seem a bit far fetched, hard to tell without actually seeing the car up close though...I'd never buy a car on eBay without actually driving it and performing an array of checks. Doesn't seem like a well maintained example but I do agree with Vince Ponz, you won't find a 911 at a much lower price.
By the way, I got a kick out of this: "Leaks a little oil on passenger side of the motor - what old porsche / vw doesnt ?" - Umm, mine doesn't. _________________ 924 NA - December/'78 - 5-speed snailshell

A car like that for, say, $3500, would be a satisfactory donor car for a V8 conversion project, imho.
Renegade says: "The V8 is a bit heavier than the 911 engines, but with the use of aluminum heads, the engine weight is very comparable to the 930 (911 turbo) motors. You can expect the same weight bias in your 911 V8 as a stock 911 Turbo (rear 62%, front 38%, approx.)...Late 1975 to 1977 915 with 8:31 ring and pinion. Ok brakes. Galvanized chassis to fight rust."
I know a guy who picked up a running 911 and running 928 by picking up a $6000 repair bill from a woman, so I personally wouldn't jump at this particular piece at this price. But, if I had $10K to throw around, I'd start a V8 conversion project on that puppy and make a sleeper*.
* I've ridiculed the 'sleeper' concept in the past, but this is one instance where 'sleeper' makes sense. The car is a beautiful car, as all 911s are beautiful (and most 'sleepers' look like shit), but everyone knows this is a relatively speaking slow 911. The V8 in that car would make it scream. I mean, imagine being passed at 170 mph by that vintage of Targa - it would be quite a surprise. _________________ 1980 924 turbo, MSD, Meth. Inj, otherwise stock. |

170mph?! In a mid-'70's Targa?! I hope you have your burial plot paid for... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |
