Ran an unknown condition PS pump for less than 5 minutes without fluid (mostly idling, couple revs). Pump now leaks. Who to blame. . .myself???

I don't think 5 minutes would hurt it too bad - the residual fluid should keep it lubricated enough.
I just pulled mine (plus I have another spare) if you need one - it was working fine. Just pay for shipping, and you can have it.

Appreciate the offer. I was actually eyeing the rebuild kit on Rennbay. . .only $20, and people say the rebuild is a breeze. _________________ Toofah King Bad

5 min without fluid will do nothing to your pump. Rest easy, I am sure the pump leaked beforehand. I am not proud to admit it, but on one of my S cars I ran the pump without fluid for several days and it incurred no damages at all. The reason for this stupidity was a rack seal had failed and I needed the car badly but could not keep fluid in it. However obvious, It must be pointed out that driving the car for prolonged drives with no fluid in the rack is damaging to the rack without a doubt.
One porsche I bought appeared to have ran over a curb and torn the PS pump clean off. The owner had just decided to drive the car anyway with a dry rack. I dont know how long he did this for but the rack had more play than a detroit rust sled.
If I can get around to it, I will post a how to on a 20 dollar 944 PS rack reseal. I just need a rack to reseal, because I dont have any that leak any more. |
