| Forgive me, I am a complete noob to the 924 Porsche World. How important is the air duct to the alternator? Is this something that I should be concerned with as a priority in bringing my 924 up to decent mechanical reliabilty? I feel a bit silly in asking this but I am sure the duct work was there for a reason. |

nah its not important. its supposed to prolong the alternator life, but whatever its definitely not important for getting it running. _________________ 1980 924 NA

In a hot clima-state like Texas it will be important. Here in germany were i live it is not necessary.I am driving without it since years, no problem. _________________ NA 924 - april/1977- 4-speed-audi gearbox.

Yeah, what Nobbi says applies to hot climate but even though we don't have extreme hot all the time (in summer around 35-36C max), it's good to have it because on NA alternator sits very low and it catches a lot of dirt. If a car doesn't have it, it's not VITAL to get one, but recommended. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

I am driving with that huge under-engine-cover,so there isnt much dirt coming toward the alternator.Never had a problem in 20 years of ownership. But i am driving 99 % on well paved roads.....dont know about texas. So it`s up to you. _________________ NA 924 - april/1977- 4-speed-audi gearbox.

the alt on the n/a is right in front of the exhaust manifold, alot of heat there to reduce the functional life of the alt, fresh air ducting certainly doesnt hurt, and replacement tubing is cheap at a hardware store. so while id agree its not a critical component, it does serve an important function and is worth attending too, plus its a cheap and easy fix... _________________ Eric

| Thanks guys. On the basis of your replies I will place it on the lower portion of the to-do list. Don't have the splash guard on it either so there should be sufficient air flow for the time being. There is a long list of repairs to do. Just bought it non-running two months ago and it finally moved on it's own power the other day with a complete fuel system cleaning including the tank and a new Timing belt. |
