Last week I went to the test for my LPG install.
It runs on LPG, but doesn't start on lpg. Also, I'm not able to directly switch the fuel. I have to switch the msq file and the hardware separately to fully switch the fuel.
I need a new MS unit for the switching stuff (with extra code etc) but it's expensive and I wanted to do that after I passed the test (because it'd be a waste of money if I failed the test).

Anyway, the system is slooooooooow. I had to wait an hour before I was tested.
Had to drive the car in and because of the long waiting, I switched back to petrol and shut down my laptop.
So I rebooted when I was up, and the testguy asked if it ran on lpg.... no it didn't...wait a sec... click click.. now it runs on lpg.

Immediately he told me I'd fail the whole test this way. Blah blah, you have to be able to switch between petrol and lpg with a flick of the switch.
But what if I can't drive on petrol?....yeah...uhhh.... (that's easily done ).
He performed some tests (leakage and cop a feel on the car) and I showed him that I'm able to switch it.... ran the lpg msq file, switched the hardware to petrol... that way it's uberrich on petrol but can start and idles with some throttle. Then I only had to switch the hardware back to lpg. He still wanted to fail me, but after bringing some collegues with him they told me they haven't seen anything like this before and they were very impressed and thought I was working in the lpg business or something.

Anyway..I passed it so now it's all legal and I can easily tweak the little stuff.

They weighed the car too. With the lpg tank in (50% full and petrol tank 50% full) the weight was 570kg on the front axle, 620 on the rear axle.
Totalling the weight to 1190 kg ( ) with a ratio of 48/52 which is good enough

so now I'm captain cheap.

Cool! Nice work Captain Cheap!! Recent pics??

Sounds like some messing around to change between fuels? What's the long term plan in that regard?

Never driven a LPG car - how's the performance compare to regular petrol?

Cheers,

I took the car to work a few times (20km from home) and that went perfect all the time. Logging and tuning when I got home.

So the car's good enough for a daily driver, especially since I installed that new starter. Haven't charged the battery for weeks, while before I had to charge it every night

The planning is to only get a new MS unit in a month or so. The only problem I've got is the software switch and a new unit is prepped for table switching (and some other minor things).

That should be plug&play, only have to copy my software. Wiring is all prepped for switching MS too... that's the only thing I'll have to do.

Got some minor problems with my PWM idle valve, appears to be non-functioning. Last time the wires came loose in the connector so I replaced it with simpler connectors and at that time it worked, but it could be I switched polarity and blew the valve. Got a spare one and the car still idles (700rpm cold) but sometimes needs a few starts to keep running while before that wasn't a problem.

And I'm planning to pimp my luggage compartment. Haven't got carpet in the trunk because of that lpg tank and I'll probably make a nice wooden floor with piano hinges (for spare wheel well and those side compartments), combined with foam and finished with fake leather. Should reduce noise too, but the car is wonderfully silent at 120km/h

I'll shoot some pics when I get back from my vacation. I stuffed the porsche completely there's a tent in it from the seventies, heavy duty cotton stuff, and all sorts of other camping stuff...but it fits... I underestimated the cargo space with the lpg tank.

My current yearly costs are now:
- 70eur insurance
- 30eur for annual road test
- 50ct/liter fuel (or 1,50 on petrol) with an estimated consumption of 10km/liter on lpg (haven't checked that yet, can't read km's when I drive both fuels)

So it's mega cheap... I bet it's the cheapest sports car in the country in running costs. There has been put a lot of money in it...but that doesn't count

About the performance, I can't feel any difference in performance on lpg. Both fuels need to be fine tuned (as well as ignition) but it's still really fast on lpg I expected 10% less power, but I don't feel it or I didn't lose power.

washed the car today. There was vegetation and birdshit growing on it. and I didn't like that.

Also, the paint of my hoodscoop was coming loose, some ugly repaired damage on the front (right wing) was showing primer and my mirror missed some paint (LH).

I resprayed the scoop, I taped the mirror and fender and sprayed that too.

The colour is the same in which the spoiler has been painted, it's a bit different which you can see especially on the front wing where there's no subtle blend from original to spray can paint. Look closely and you'll see it in the following pics which I shot just now.

My two babies from the front (oh wait, that's my mom ) See the line on the wing? (in accordance with the line from the popup light)

The other front.

The actual front

From the side.
I guess the paint will decolour a bit so it'll be the same as the spoiler...which has been done a few weeks ago. Didn't do it really nice (especially the prepping, you can see sanding scratches beneath the paint....but who cares. It's technically a great car )

rear... can't clean that carbon off my bumper.

rear again.

artistic shot, due to lack of space. Notice the old licenceplate lights under the bumper. Didn't feel like removing them. The plate used to be mounted under the bumper because of the porsche plate between the lights. This looks much better.

James Bond style LPG filler behind the license plate.

LPG tank and all my stuff in (except clothes) for my holiday.

I don't like the pics, damn flasher on it puts too much light on it but heck, it's the same car.

You have to make some sacrifices to run cheap. I don't like the tank either (besides from the mad max look) but there's little alternative. A ring tank in the spare wheel well isn't available and means even more weight behind the rear wheels. Now the centre of gravity a bit more up, but rather up than to the rear.
The reason I blinded my hatch is to mask the tank.

Paint it blue so it looks like a massive nitrous bottle.
If it doesn`t get enough stares from ricers try adding a few NOS stickers.

Nice Pics mate and I also like your spoiler. What/ where is it from? Must have missed it if you posted before.

Hahaha I haven't thought about painting it blue. If I had done that, I didn't have to shade my hatch.

Btw, last week I was attending a car meeting. Didn't go with the porsche, but some friend were there with true cool cars:
- audi quattro typ85 (iirc)
- BMW 323i with a toyota 2JZ-GTE vvti engine (yeah, that thing's FAST! and street legal. got more power than a supra)
- BMW 1602 modded
- VW bug with a subaru engine.

in short, all the others were ricers, with 'tuned' cars... flashy lights, audio systems etc etc, and they walked past that BMW-2JZ and they didn't even know how unbelievably superior that car was compared to their cars. They thought it was the stock engine and because the exterior is only modified subtle it was the greatest sleeper ever.

He was a wolf in sheeps clothes between the dumbass ricers. we tried to wheelie the bug and we heard comments like 'put the handbrake on' such simple persons.
pic:

300+ hp from a stock engine (yes yes, no excessive wear) and the same mpg as our cars if you go easy on it.
It reached 100mph in a few hundred metres (my body ran on adrenaline at that time... ) diabolic machine. Daily driver

edit:

old vs new engine.

The badge on the front tells you it's fast... but only if you know

anyway... if I paint the tank blue I'm sure I'm badass at such meetings and on the way home I can't stop laughing about the stupidity of those ricers.

some pics from the engine bay.

too bad the belt cover is already corroding, but that's no problem at all.

atm my edis is used too and the stock dizzy is piggybacking for tacho.

I put my coil pack there too. It's a PITA for number 1 lead though!

I like the idea of the massive NOs tank, you need a massive button on the dash to match....

lead1 doesn't cause any trouble. For some weird reason lead3 is a bit short. 1 is just long enough. Can't find any contact between the belt cover and the coil pack so it's good enough

I like buttons

One of those discreet, unobtrusive red flip cover rocket launch switches should do the trick.

So about that spoiler? .........................
