The car either gets towed and scraped or I get it home by thursday.1981 Porsche 924 Turbo. RED. 38000 original miles. I have multiple problems with this car and I need it running long enough to drive 30 miles safely and only have one day to do it. I HAVE 0 EXPERIENCE WITH THESE. I also dont have a shop manual. 1st off, Timing is off and I have no idea how to get it straight. Alternator produces no charge. Car is very lean (white plugs, runs hot) no matter how I play with the timing. The only way I was able to make the car idle smooth was to hold some plate with all of the injector lines going to it down a millimeter. It appears to be an early airflow sensor. Apparently, playing with this plate adjusts lean/rich. The car does drive. Holding the throttle, it accelerates very slowly to 4000rpm then takes off to redline with car in nuetral. Under load( driving) the car accelerates to 3000rpm, rapidly climbs to 4500rpm, then loses power. Power brake booster does not work either. I noticed the 02 sensor was unplugged so I searched through the engine bay and found a somewhat thick green wire that was cut and not going anywhere so I hooked it to the sensor. Car does not run smooth enough for me to tell a difference. I have checked for vacuum leaks via starting fluid test and fixed all vacuum leaks. I will also continue searching the forums for answers, but I just want this thing going as it is to pretty of a car for a junkyard. I also replaced fuel filter. ANY help would be great.

I read in another post that there is now way it will run right if i can see the plate. does this mean that i need to hook up air filter for it to run right? i dont currently have the boot from the filter box to the "fuel distributor"

Someone likely tried to compensate for the vaccuum leaks by messing with the mixture. Info is here on how to adjust it.
On the turbo, the boot can be off and the car will run (unlike the non-turbo). Can't imagine the motor will enjoy running without an air cleaner, though. _________________ Toofah King Bad

FWIW, there is a very knowledgable board member quite near you. . .but he can be quite grumpy. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Thx. I just read about the 3mm hex adjust to mess with fuel mixture in the fuel dizzy. Does that affect afr at idle only or the whole rpm range.

if its only 30 miles, pay to have it flatbeded, or rent a truck and trailer and get it home first, youve alot to do and trying to rig it to work with mssing parts is not a good idea. youve got multiple intake and tuning issues that need to be dealt with correctly, and then theres the brakes thing.... worse comes to worse find a brave friend and flat tow it with a tow strap (real slow, brakes ya know..), theres too many different "get it home " options, to risk causing more damage by wading it up when the throttle goes nuts , or brakes dont, or.....
but to actually fix it, along with the above i would be looking at every rubber hose and gasket very closly, and replacing as many as possible. you can use rubber tape or even inner tube patch in a pinch, as a temp solution. if you can find a "close" bellows from an audi or 80s vw you might be able to rig up the missing piece, but it wont work long or well you need the right parts.. you cant properly tune it until you get the system sealed up.
Id bleed out the brakes for the tow home and then move on to making it a runner... outstanding car, just remember rule one of 931 ownership....
if you rig it, it will fail, and it will cost you dearly when it does... _________________ Eric

What Eric said. Roadside on the way home is not the place or time to learn how to make the cars run. You won't get it running safely in time. I probably couldn't, and I know them very well!!!
This is a very complex car, unlike the NA. For example - you can't adjust the timing. Not directly, anyway.
You must get a shop manual, and we're talking factory, not Haynes - it's no good for a Turbo, especially a late one as you have. _________________ Vaughan Scott
