I tried and tried and tried pushing this trim back on where it looks like its supposed to be on the other side to no avail...

6 hands on it and still no dice...

how can this be fixed?

if I cant figure it out myself a glass shop is gonna get it once I get this thing on the road

You'll have to take it off & apart, then reglue it with a good glass primer & glue.
You'll be lucky if it works long term. Unlikely you'll find a glass shop that will touch it.
The easiest route is to find another hatch in good condition. They're 2K new & a dime a dozen used.

The "trim" is the frame. The pressure from the lift struts push the frame off the glass. It will only get worse. Always lift the hatch from the center in the rear to avoid twisting of the hatch, it will help keep the glass & frame from separating.

Its a little of both. You can tell the frame is pushed towards the roof by the narrower gap.

That's the safe bet. Better make sure you can keep water out of the car while you're looking for a new hatch after you break this one. It takes a lot of patience to repair these. It might take a couple tries to get it to last.

If you can remove the frame or pull it back far enough and sand blast the glass in that area you have a better chance of it being a permanent bond.
I have 4 hatches if someone needs some to fix. Can strap to a pallet and ship

I've gone through the trouble of repairing separated glass. Bought 3m window bond or whatever it's called, did lots of prep and clamping and let dry for a few days. The hatch remained fixed for maybe three days and/or five openings.

Seriously, the only solution that's out there is to find a used one that has remained in good shape after all these years. Otherwise it's my current solution: a couple nice strips of black electrical tape across the gap. Holds on for years and keeps the water out!

I have a line on an 83 944 non roller locally that has a whole good hatch...

might wind up with the whole shell... no engine, torque tube, tranny, maybe no suspension... no front bumper or fenders

good doors and hatch AND ENTIRE BLACK INTERIOR WITH GOOD SEATS

might have some parts for you guys too soon

going to look this Saturday, I AM coming home with that hatch at the very least

If that purchase doesn't go through, drop me a line. I have an original hatch from my '76 sitting in the garage. I upgraded to a 944 hatch and it works. I can send you pics if you like.
